Lathe threading insert for getting close to a shoulder.

I normally grid the edge of the laydown inserts. There's some swiss tooling like Whizcut that looks made to go pretty close to shoulders.

Is it possible to spend TOO much on Equipment?

If the equipment is sitting and earning zero money and taking up valuable space then yes. This can more easily happen with inspection and support equipment.

Turning a dental implant prototype part Back turn it or hand off to a subspindle?

By OD I mean the largest diameter, that's what I'd grab onto for 2nd op, collet machined to that dia and it shoulders the back face of it to keep it square and a bit of clearance on your smaller tapered diameter with the rads. As to the threading for a M1.4x0.30 getting to about .008-.010" of a...

    Understanding Material Composition

What's the Molybdenum content on your test? I wondering if you got 316.

Turning a dental implant prototype part Back turn it or hand off to a subspindle?

I've done lots of small-ish stuff like that before, I'd turn the front side/drill then grab the OD in a stepped collet. Then face/finish the bore which appears to have a small taper. That way there's no burrs anywhere, easy chip control, better finish. Pretty simple part. Any reason to be...

Transitioning from Manual to CNC: Seeking Advice and Insights

Hitting a wall finding new work is pretty normal during recessions and it's just barely begun, manual or CNC won't change that but I can tell you those in debt will get extra desperate and likely run their CNC's for nothing to keep the lights on. It's still plenty possible to earn a decent...

Tooling for a 1/2"-5 Acme double start internal thread 1.25" long

A thread that small with that fast a lead won't have hardly any locking power for a vice jaw. That project sounds like a WTF all around.

Tooling for a 1/2"-5 Acme double start internal thread 1.25" long

The Lead is always how much a thread moves in 1 revolution. Although it's been quite a few years, I've cut a few double start square and acme external and internal, triple start and other weird threads before.

    That random phone call

Coolant/oil covered parts still full of burrs and knife edges everywhere that have to be completely washed before they can be welded are definitely a favorite. Must be the same muhhchinists who brag about their 40 year old Nicholson files that are still good as new, yeah, you never fucking...

    That random phone call

On behalf of all welders out there, always deburr the fucking parts! I don't know who where ever decided that it was ok to not deburr shit because " oh it just gets welded" but I see it all the fucking time from a few shops & muhhchinists, guess what, a welder has to handle the fucking things or...

Tool Recommendations wanted for small high feed mill in 316

Maybe also consider a stub bull nose endmill, I do a lot of skimming of stainless/duplex surfaces with 3/8" stub .030"R garr VRX, I like to go with a corner rad at least one size bigger than the debt to remove so no material rolls ahead of the cutting edge. In your case I might go with a .030"...

Variation in 1018 steel causing issues with insert drill

Sounds like you guys have few options. Tough it out as best you can and tell the supplier to never send that material again and make sure it's spec right when ordering next time. " No Garbage From ABCD/or China/etc". See if they'll take what you got left back but they probably won't. Buy the...

Did you try doubling the feed?

Tooling for a 1/2"-5 Acme double start internal thread 1.25" long

I'm looking at this as a 1/2"-10 double start with a 5 lead. Not a 1/2"-5 with a 2.5 Lead... pretty big difference. Pretty sure his customer effed up the call out. I'd be asking to see/measure a sample if they can't figure it out.
