    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

Get one with a straight 1/2" or 5/8" shank. Maybe up to 3/4" I think 4C collets take. I have several, I just grabbed the one with the B&S #9 shank. Irby

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

I've never trusted drills to drill straight. If I want a straight hole to the centerline of the spindle or headstock, I use an endmill. Drill undersize with a drill, clean up with an endmill. If I want it true to less than a thousandth, I bore it...using one of these. :) Irby

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

The drill bit will wander off center if the bore of the ram is off center with the headstock. Sometimes the headstock and tailstock are not on the same centerlines. They are make to be on the same at the factory for a matched set, but over the years and with mis-matched pieces of hardware, they...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

I had started making some tooling to bore my 9" swing Cataract tailstock out to MT1 but stopped when I thought I'd just make a bunch of tooling with the "Hardinge tailstock taper" on them. But after getting and using a later model tailstock that has the MT1 taper and accumulating MT1 tooling...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

At the very end of the "Hardinge taper" I measure .330", just before it goes to that smaller diameter. See if you measure that, or close to it, at the small end of the taper on the center you have. Nowhere on the MT1 is it that small. That could tell you if your tailstock has the "Hardinge...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

I guess you mean 0.4635? That's close to what a Hardinge taper would measure. My tailstock, which has a "Hardinge tailstock taper" and is probably the same vintage as yours, measures 0.465. If it were an MT1, the measurement would be closer to 0.475, although it's really hard to determine the...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

Thanks, Jim! That's my version of Patrick Black's Rock Moss Green. But the best part is that headstock can run off the DC motor in the background and can be slid anywhere along the lathe bed. The blue Danfoss cycletrol 150 up beside the DRO controls the motor. That's at about 3500 RPM! Irby

Here's a photo showing the old 9" swing Cataract slide sitting on my newer 9" swing Cataract lathe bed and that the top of the slides where the QC toolpost holder mounts are the same height. And also a "slight" difference in the sturdiness of the two slides. :) Irby Irby

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

Just to give more data on Cataract lathe slides for you, here is a comparison of a 7" swing slide and a 9" swing slide. The 9" swing slide is 3.62" wide on the lower part and the 7" swing slide is 3.20" wide on the lower part. Both that I have are stamped with the same Hardinge Bros oval stamp...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

Here's what that AXA QC toolholder looks like on my Cataract 9" swing lathe. This lathe is bigger than yours in some respects but the swing is the same and the bed dimensions under the headstock and tailstock are identical. And the dimension (2.83") from the top of the lathe bed (bottom of the...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

You know, my friend has a 7" Hardinge Cataract that he has the OXA size QC on. I have a 9" swing Hardinge toolroom Cataract (the really neat "Quick-Change Swing Precision Lathe") that I use an AXA on like Tom A suggests. I should have paid attention to the 9" swing of your lathe! AXA is the...

    Elgin / Hardinge lathe help

My friend who has the same lathe uses a size OXA quick change tool post set (made outside the US) he bought from a place online. I don't know if we're allowed to mention names of places here but you can search around and find that size set a few places. It seems to work just fine. I'll get him...

Hardinge Cataract Quick Change lathe questions

falcaogodoy, Thanks for posting those pictures! I have a lathe like it. Mine is SN 246. That divider on the headstock is very interesting. Would you please post more pictures of it? Thanks! Irby Translated by Google: Obrigado por postar essas fotos! Eu tenho um torno igual. O meu é SN 246...

    camel back drill press

I have a question to Joe about welding that sorta fits into this discussion since it's about welding up the "oops holes" in a camel back drill table. Way back in my hot roddin' days of the 60's, I used to stick weld the cast iron center section of Chevelle's rear ends to the steel tubes going...

    Planer question

As enginebill said, planers are much slower than mills and they also take up a lot more room, so shops shy away from them. Plus they aren't made any more (I don't think) so there aren't replacement parts available. But to a few of us here they are so cool and we still use them! And smt posted a...

Canedy Otto #36 21" camelback drill press

Hey, metalmagpie, isn't that drill that you did a super fine restore on a Canedy Otto #36? So I have a question. If Forest can't find the top bevel gear, I wonder if a set of bevel gears off a W.F. & J. Barnes 20" drill could be made to work? I have a set of those gears just lying around here...

Free 22" WF & J Barnes camel back drill in southeast Virginia near Hampton, Williamsburg

OK, what would it take for someone to get this neat old drill? Do I have to put it together, add a motor, and have it running? :) That picture of metalmagpie's drill all restored and painted pretty has me wanting to do the same for this Barnes drill. But that still wouldn't create more room for...
