Show off your old shop press! KR Wilson, Manley, Lempco, etc

When I get back to the Shop later this week, will take a few photos of my old Manley 40 ton. Have no idea how old it is, but it still works good, although it leaks a bit. Has an electric motor and pitman arm that pumps it up. Neat as hell.

    Axelson lathe at HGR

I would LOVE to have it. Seen that it also has the taper attachment. Distance isn't a problem as it is in Ohio and I am in southern Indiana. I just flat don't have the room. Already have 4 lathes, 3 drill presses, 3 mills, 2 shapers, 2 surface grinders, 3 band saws, die filer, compressor, 4...

    Grand Rapids #28 Grinder-Questions

Yay!!! She is not only up and running, but have done my first job on the Grand Rapids #28 surface grinder. Been a rather tortuous journey to get to this point. The move to my Shop was a bit of a pain. Actually not the move, as I and a friend got it to the Shop on his trailer quite easily. It...

help with mystery brass operation plate - which machine ?

In a reverse case, there is a massive Western "Big Four" radial arm drill press at the shop I used to work at. Been out of service for many years now and is pretty rusty. Someone has removed all the brass tags due to the intention of the owner at some point scrapping the machine. It has yet to...

    Grand Rapids #28 Grinder-Questions

Yay!!! I found it. On another page in the data from Vintage Machinery there was a chart that stated that the Grand Rapids surface grinders (including the Model 28), used Gargoyle DTE Light. That oil was easy to locate, and is ISO VG 32. Common as grass. Will pick up 5 gallons sometime today...

    Grand Rapids #28 Grinder-Questions

Absolutely buck. I have spun the wheel a bit already, and it feels good. I am definitely easy when starting machines that have sat for any length of time. In my Shop, everything is ancient, with several machines well over 100 years. They work good because I, my father, and grandfather before...

    Grand Rapids #28 Grinder-Questions

Thank you all for your replies. The spindle of this machine is comprised of at least two, and possibly four, pre-loaded ball bearings (will have to dig around and see if I can find the parts section again). I am thinking the models 25 and 28 were lubed for the life of the bearings. I certainly...

    Grand Rapids #28 Grinder-Questions

Greetings Gentlemen. I have recently saved from scrapping a Grand Rapids (Gallmeyer and Livingston) model #28 surface grinder. A cursory inspection has found no real deficiencies, other than a ghastly paint finish, and anything made of rubber dissolving. I speculate it is an early post-WW2...

36" do all metal master horizontal saw

You will have to resize them. I can't recall the size limit for posting, but the average cell phone photo is around 3MB. I am thinking the limit per photo is less than 1MB.

36" do all metal master horizontal saw

Agree, would like to see photos. Do-All does, and have made horizontal saws. We have one where I work and, from what I can tell, is probably from the 1980's or thereabouts. God-awful machine to run, a real P.O.S., with horrible balance of the saw arm, cheap sheet steel abounding, and noisier...

Vintage Machinery selling on FB Marketplace

I believe the OP's point is just informational. Someone here on the forum may be interested. I would be mildly interested in the radial arm drill press however, if the machines are indeed in Arkansas, what little interest I may possess quickly evaporates. I tend to agree that the exposure to...

20" G&E Shaper - Unloading and eventual power up

I did around 200 miles back in 2013 to get my Gemco. I thought that was a long haul.

    F/S Big LeBlonde Lathe

I am NOT an engineer. That said, I will read, and re-read what you have posted. It appears on the surface to make sense, I am sure it is correct, but I must wrap (what is left) of my frontal lobe around it. Thank you thermite, you always come through.

    F/S Big LeBlonde Lathe

Thanks thermite. I need to digest that a bit though (cogitate on the forces at play). In my experience, and I have used specific lathes from new to an elderly state (a Rockwell 11" with hardened ways, new in 1978 to present), and noted that the worst wear was on the backside of the way closest...

    Kempsmith....Still Going.

Thank you all for the kind comments. As I was growing up in the family shop, I was in awe of that Kempsmith miller. Will be 64 in September, and we have had that machine for as long as I can remember. I think my grandfather and his partner acquired it sometime around 1950 to 55.

    Kempsmith....Still Going.

Just thought I would post a photo I took today of my favorite milling machine. The old girl was built and shipped in November of 1918, so will be 104 later this year. Been doing some paying jobs at the Shop lately, and found a use for the Kempsmith. Needed to mill a step in a piece of cold roll...

Finally picked up a #4 Atlas Arbor Press for the collection.

Have wanted an arbor press for years, but have not ran into one yet. Have to suffer through with my 40 ton Manley and a newer "H" frame Ramco hydraulic 55 ton. Ramco is American made from around 1990. Nice, stout press. Manley is ancient, leaks a bit, but works fine.

    Gear lube option for Hendey

And to John Oder, Doozer, Ramsay, nice to see you folks are still around. I haven't posted in forever it seems. With all the change in the world, it is nice to see some familiar names still around.
