Hobbing a gear with a tap help

couple of tips make a hob, single point a cutter out of tool steel , make it slightly bigger then the worm, turn it and mill it. look it up, on you tube or world wide web, then heat treat it. the worm and worm gear have to be a match set. it's checked by center distance, and pattern check. the...

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

cbn plated machined well but could not hold form let explain a few other details, if CBN plated wheels work great when it's moderate tolerance, in my world it's .0005 max. form wheels are expensive, high cost long lead times, sometimes 2-3 months The pro's if no issue with tolerance and lead...

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

with precision ground gears , typically for aircraft application, these attributes have to be held lead (parallel ) Involute (and can be tricky).0002-.0003 inch tolerance form of the gear total and tooth to tooth error(index).0002 inch tooth to tooth modified tip offs so important to maintain...

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

I would rarely leave more than .010 stock per surface, and was usually .005 stock per surface, and I been doing this for 35 years, all different type of parts but mostly cylindrical, and harden or carburized gear teeth. but hey different strokes for different folks. creep grinding whole another...

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

read the links provided, it's not common to use for steel, but hey it worked.

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

It was recommended by our grinding wheel sales engineer, and it worked, it required less dressing, held size and form, the guys on the floor were happy with it. aluminum oxide works but requires more dressing and often glaze and cause cracks and burns,

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

I agree. That is such a weird suggestion for grinding steel of any kind.

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

we had good luck grinding low alloy carburized parts, that were 60 HRc min case hardness, outside diameters, ang high precision gears, worked well on tools steels as well. but stock removal generally was .005 inch per surface. most of these parts had to be Temper etched(no over temper) and...

    Hole size after heat treat?

I guess we are discussing apples and oranges. I discussing about long deep holes with 5x depth of the diameter. Most are bored then honed to true up. The diameters with large diameters have to be w/I true position before honing. If you look at the amount of stock removal It is very little. If...

Hardend D2 Material grinding wheel selection

tool steel is hard to grind, the right wheel for this would be a silicon carbide grinding wheel. plenty of coolant as it will crack, aluminum oxide wheel will require dressing every part and will glaze which causes cracks, due to heat build up. check with the local sales engineers, cbn is for...

    Hole size after heat treat?

to true up a hole it has to be bored, jig ground or ID grind, depending on the type of part. edit: and I left out unconventional machining, Wire & electrode EDM, and others

    Hole size after heat treat?

    bull, have you honed

    Hole size after heat treat?

honing is only as straight as the hole all ready is, honing will true up the diameter, otherwise it will follow the hole. if it needs to be straight then it needs bored or jig ground, run a sample test and hone them and see if it's acceptable.

also it always better to finish precision holes after heat treat, hone it leave minimal stock
