Tips for saving money on tooling for small jobshop?

We used to do the same thing, and still do for odd sizes, but dang those inserts are getting pricey, i can buy a 1" DIa 2 insert indexable drill body and 10 inserts for the price of a few carbide spade drill inserts these days.

Tips for saving money on tooling for small jobshop?

We have found that spending money up front on good tools, saves money long term. We used to buy just about every brand of general purpose endmills whenever on sale, and we thought that was the right move, however we started running top of the line emuge tools, ie holders, drills, endmills etc...

    Gift for graduating machinist?

Haas Tooling Has a nice little starter inspection kit on the haas website for about $350. Appears to be rebranded starrett tools, but comes with an indicator, 0-1" mic, 6" calipers, 1-2-3 Blocks, and some other stuff all in a nice case. I can not attest to quality as i personally have not used...

    Brother Speedio 16k spindle question

IF you end up going the high feed index route, our haas mini mill 10k spindle loves the kyocera 3/4" raptor feed. worked more than surprisingly well for us and inserts lasted forever.

    Best General Purpose End Mill

I think from a pure general purpose performance standpoint, I would say sgs z carb or emuge top cut, 4 or 5 flute .015 corner rad. Thats based off tool life, tolerance, etc. But thats just my .02cents

    Best Hydraulic Chucks

No Problem, The FPC emuge stuff is our shops favorite for tight tol work, preferred over our hydraulics for the most part. Nice thing about them is they are great general purpose as they work exceedingly well for both rough & finish compared to ER32 and sidelocks.

ERP - JobBoss^2 vs. ProShop vs. Something Actually Good?

If you finance a new haas, it has to do exatly that. They have them wirelessly connected so that if someone every misses a payment on the machine, they can shut the machine down remotely. I only know because they make you call haas every six months or so until its payed off to get a code to...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

We offered exactly what he said he was looking for, which was about $5 over his current position. If i had to guess, he got a $10+/hr raise to stay.

So quick update, we found a perfect candidate, offered him exactly what he wanted and.....His current employer gave him a promotion and a substantial raise when he went to put in his two weeks. Back to square one. Second time this had happened.. I guess companies are just at a point where the...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

Funny that you went down this worm hole, actually we are currently looking into most of the above that you mentioned. I was at a implempenting robots in the job shop environment event last week, which basically talked about running longer run jobs lights out with a robot and using the same...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

Exactly. Although I am not convinced the problem is because of government benefits (i would say skilled laborers with good wages would not have a huge effect by this) however i can see where the lower pay scale and unskilled labor jobs would. I am simply looking for ideas on what has worked...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

Which post? because I have not commented or liked anything (at least intentionally) regarding gov benefits. If I could remove the hijack replies about gov benefits I would. EDIT IF your referring to the one post i liked from ttrager, he talked about hiring someone and on start date no call no...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

Most of the ones in the past either didn’t work out or left, we did have one kid that stood out over the years, I would have loved to keep on, was smart, eager to learn and loved the trade. He was offfered a programming job for a big med device company that offered to pay for him to get a...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

We have a kid here on co-op from local high school already. Every other week (classes one week and co op the next). Co-Ops are paid around here for the most part, plus they get the school credit. Helps out but not the solution (short term) for the positions i need to fill.

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

My buddy makes $130/hr as an electrician out towards boston doing rated work for state and local govt jobs, however if he gets moved to a commercial building, his wage goes down to $32/hr. He has been on rated work for over 3 years but could get bumped off the jobs at any time. The problem is...

    Struggle Finding New Employees.

I agree, if they enjoy the work, they tend to be great employees, however its hard to give the new guy 5 figure material/casting for a 1 piece job, although I have other guys who can do it, we need another guy who can do this type of work as this is where our backlog often is. Casting houses...
