The hi-low is the WYE/Delta, or star delta, waiting configuration. You can hear the contactors switching when you switch speed ranges >2500 to <2501. Surprisingly my encoder was spotless looking. Not 100% sure on what you mean by “running the spindle from the spindle drive”. When I force it into low range and turn the override up the commanded spindle speed matched the rpm readout on the spindle drive. SB, I checked as you recommended and there is a lot more movement than what was listed on the lathe inspection card you attached. Zero'd the indicator with the machine off and saw .000 - .0035" movement with the machine on. Engaged the lead screw and watched the dial move to a new "Zero"...- Togeneral99

Thanks gentlemen. Eccentric gear on the end of the lead screw would do it I believe but that would mean both gear boxes had the same issue. Not impossible but I'll check the runout on the old gear box and see what that is. I'm leaning toward something in the headstock but I don't know my way...- Togeneral99

Muzzle threading setup with a long headstock?

Sorry GWilson, your advice was not ignored. I placed an indicator on the carriage and indicated onto the ground bed ways and detected no lifting that way. I'd expect any large manufacturer to have a good database for searching trouble records and verifying where the error occurred and take proper steps to correct the error in the process. You are correct, the roll pin I replaced was the shear pin. It wasn't damaged but had more slop than I would have liked so I made a tapered pin to replace it.
