Whacheon D1-6 or A1-6 spindle head and metric vs Imp stud threads.

Roger that! Or I could just find the one I have instead of always being in emergency mode sacrificing organization on the alter of sloth.

Whacheon D1-6 or A1-6 spindle head and metric vs Imp stud threads.

Speaking of a tiny bit more... Metric is 1.5 mm/thread, imperial is 18 tpi, so measuring with a 1/2 in caliper I screwed up the difference between 9 threads per half inch and 8.4667 threads per half inch and ordered the Imperial set. Woe is me. Anyone have a good source for metric D1-6...

How does sb9 rear adjustable drive driven motor pulley remove?

How embarrassing. Proving to be a challenge to find either end of the pin. Thanks, f

How does sb9 rear adjustable drive driven motor pulley remove?

Hello. I'm trying to replace the flat belt drive pulley (cone pulley) with a v belt pulley on an sb 9. The lathe has a rear adjustable (meaning big level to tension/slacken the belt) drive. I have the shaft out of the drive and the pulley off but I need to put a keyway in the shaft and the large...

Yuasa B6439 chuck on Whacheon lathe. Modern equlivant and or parts?

Hey, Thanks for the info. There's nothing really wrong with either chuck, but the 3 jaw has a zerk on the face. If it is a high end chuck (seems not but far from horrible) then I was just keen to locate spare/soft jaws and find out what kind of grease is proper for the thing. I don't have...

Best practice for motor overload protection using a vfd

-Hello, On the point about setting motor current, I completely agree. This one has no settings in the manual at all for motor size, full load current etc. Sellers similarly silent. ( To explain further, there are even worse things than a certain proscribed VFD make, and that is a make that...

Yuasa B6439 chuck on Whacheon lathe. Modern equlivant and or parts?

Hey, I have a Yuasa 8 1/2 in three jaw chuck that says "Made in Japan" and B6439 on it. It was with a Whacheon lathe. Any idea where I can get parts/info on this thing? Trying to put it in service. The lathe also came with a nice looking 10 1/2 in 4 jaw chuck that has 80004 stamped on the...

Thanks - that was what I needed to make sense of things. Specs very helpful. f

Best practice for motor overload protection using a vfd

Hello, Very much appreciated info in the responses above. I thought I'd update on the path taken. The lathe has a late 80's vintage heater based protection relay for each of the spindle motor and the coolant pump. It is a three phase system, and has many very nice looking contactors, a 110...

Whacheon D1-6 or A1-6 spindle head and metric vs Imp stud threads.

Hey, I am trying to put a 4 jaw chuck on a Whacheon (17 x 40 approx) lathe and find myself basically confused by the Stud spec. I have a book on the thing I got from Whacheon for the "MS Series", as it is a clone of some Mori-seiki. The book says the thing has JIS A1-6 but Whacheon says it is...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

Don't know for sure but inside the dial there was a copper color deposition for about 1/3 to 3/4 of the way around the dial bore. I assume it has something to do with the brass shoe being smeared about, but don't see how that is even possible unless the copper colored stuff was dissolved...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

Hey - Success last night. I put the bushing shoulder just on the handle side of the threads on a pair of Al bars in the hydraulic press and used a 5.5mm socket to protect the handle threads (handle removed) on the ram side and with great fear started pumping. Got the usual enormous WHANG...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

Zow! Excellent insights. I just don't see how to get a grip on the dial/printed collar to drive (or press?) the shaft (leadscrew) out. It is flush up against the "bushing nut" (thing with the pin spanner hole). I guess I just wrap that with some kind of protective stuff and chuck it in a...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

The bushing into the saddle is not frozen. I was pretty easily able to unscrew the threaded part with a pin spanner. The leadscrew turns freely within that bushing (that screws into the saddle). The "dial" thing is frozen to the shaft that has the crank/handle keyway (a round pin actually)...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

Hey - I mean the collar with the writing on it is frozen to the shaft it is on so I can't rotate it to set the zero on it as a dial. I'm expecting to touch off on a part, hold the crank, and rotate the dial to zero to start a turning operation. I have the crank removed (had to press that...

    SB9 Cross slide dial frozen

Hello. I have a sb 9 on which the cross slide dial is frozen in place, presumably by corrosion. Is there any good way to get a grip on this to try and free it up? So far I've let it sit with blaster like un rust oil all over it but still no luck. Have not yet tried soaking it immersed in...

Best practice for motor overload protection using a vfd

Hello. I have am trying to set up a vfd to power/control a 5 horse three phase 220 v motor on a lathe in a single phase shop. I'm trying to determine the best place to have overload protection (say within VFD vs conventional thermal relay) and to thus determine what features I have to have in...

Thanks for the adjusting info!! Mine is without the spring shoe gizmo but I did need the adjustment info. Regards, f

sb 9 back gear missing detent/tensioner - won't stay in back gear.

Thanks - good idea! That would work. Removing the taper pins is defeating me and the screw/jamb nut would probably save days. I've ordered some Cu wool - just jam some down the screw hole? Thanks, f

sb 9 back gear missing detent/tensioner - won't stay in back gear.

Hello, I have a very recently acquired 9 inch workshop lathe that 1. has no tensioner bolt or provision for same on the right (bed) side of the back gear 2. falls immediately out of back gear on even hand rotation of the spindle 3. has no detent or other device between the back gear handle (on...
