I keep hearing that this winter will be bad for manufacturing in Europe.

Rolls Royce cars are German now. Rolls Royce aviation and nuclear are still nominally British. Henry Royce Cranes seem to have disappeared, although the one in the 100ton bay/erecting shop is still going strong :D

I keep hearing that this winter will be bad for manufacturing in Europe.

Don't forget that the continental European electricity grid is far more robust and interconnected than the US electricity grid.

Sorry, I was answering the 'when' part of the (rhetorical) question. :typing:

The US sanctions impacting the Chinese chip industry

The US is currently the worlds 7th largest exporter of integrated circuits by value. Those days are as far gone as the UK's dominance in steam engine exports.

Well, the US had missiles in Turkey before the USSR had missiles in Cuba... That was the root cause of the entire affair.

The US sanctions impacting the Chinese chip industry

Pot-kettle. The US is in exactly the same position, just at a couple of hundred years remove. Attempting to cripple the second largest economy in the world for purely mercantile reasons (make no mistake, that's all it is) helps no one and harms everyone. They aren't a military threat to the US...

The US sanctions impacting the Chinese chip industry

Where are the Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography machines made that China want and the US says they mustn't have? They,re made in Veldhoven, in the Netherlands. By ASML, a company that was started by two other Dutch companies:- Philips and ASMI. How the fuck does the US think it's got any right to...

I keep hearing that this winter will be bad for manufacturing in Europe.

Article here that gives some explanation. Essentially, the European LNG storage facilites have been filled somewhat earlier than anticipated, resulting in ships waiting for consumption to create the demand. Meanwhile gasification plant capacity is maxed out for day to day usage. More points in...

Not container houses, but EU countries and the UK have been sending food donations and volunteer fighters since the beginning.

North American people and companies who have Planers, Planer Mills and Shapers

Just a heads up:- It's planer. Not planner. Nor Plainer. :typing: :D

    Drill sharpener ownership, general questions.

I recently picked up a Swiss Meteor ME14 drill grinder at an auction. It'll do 1/8" to 2" with two different sized V guides. Sharpening on one wheel and point thinning on the other, Although it was a filthy mess, it had the instructions in the cabinet, along with all the standard accessories...

Got covid in one arm and flu in the other a week ago on Saturday. Got a bit of a reaction from the Moderna one, but not as bad as her indoors had.

I wouldn't shout too loud. The US foreign aid spending per capita and as a percentage of GNI is pretty pathetic compared with other countries' efforts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_development_aid_country_donors

I just put it down to senility, the same as the late Norman Atkinson.

What is the purpose for carbide insert anvils?

One problem I've found with my threading tools is that there doesn't seem to be a standard for the anvils like there is for the inserts. So I hadn't been able to work out if any of the anvils available would fit my (no-name) tools when I needed to turn a 7/16" 10tpi left-hand ACME thread. I...

American rotary ADX-60 high amperage on idle?

It's possible that the power factor is leading rather than lagging at no load due to the capacitors being sized to provide the reactive current at normal working load. You could work that out without a proper watt/power-factor meter by seeing if the current stayed the same or even fell slightly...

I keep hearing that this winter will be bad for manufacturing in Europe.

The reason that Europe, China, the US and other countries use solar and wind power is that the 'fuel' is free and the capital cost is low. With nuclear, the fuel is, to all intents and purposes, free even with storage and recycling, but the capital cost is much higher ditto with large hydro...

    Cataract swirl finish scraping?

Connelly mentions it in his book, with a description of the technique.

I keep hearing that this winter will be bad for manufacturing in Europe.

Yes, to the extent that the cement factory that I live in sight of has electricity bills of £4million and gas bills of £500,000 per month...
