    Pictures of Huge Machinery

Great stuff. Here's a better direct link, Pinterest not involved. https://flashbak.com/jakob-tuggener-photographs-weapons-switzerland-factory-1943-world-war-2-398595/

COLUMBIA FORGE AND STEEL IN PORTLAND - CLOSES - HUGE MACHINES

I was quite forlorn about that place closing, as I perused the auction catalog the day of the auction... the great majority of it was stuff that, while amazing and huge, wouldn't have a place in my shop. But there were some gems too, such as the 20" 60 series monarch lathe, the Cincy mill, etc...

    Deckel Pantograph on Craigslist Chicago

Nice looking old KF1, I believe. I'd snap it up if I was in Chicagoland.

New to me Pratt and Whitney 12x54 lathe

You're gonna love that lathe. My 16' P&W model C is super nice to run. I have found lots of good info on these on the forum here actually, some very good rebuild threads particularly for the 12", and there's plenty over at vintagemachinery too as linked to above.

    Hendey gearhead 12x30

Nice machine there, congrats on the acquisition! What's the top speed?

    Steel identification

The conventional wisdom (e.g., leaf springs are 5160, files are W1 or W2 or 1095, saw blades are L6) that existed in the smithing world previously is pretty inaccurate these days. Alloys and parts are generally made offshore, generally in Asia now. Things that were previously heat treated and...

36" do all metal master horizontal saw

Not sure… but perhaps the ML has a different serial number protocol than the earlier Metalmasters? I’ve definitely seen newer/other vertical DoAlls described as having the serial number format your saw has.

36" do all metal master horizontal saw

The first two numbers are the saw size... 36". The second two are the year, (19)41. The remaining numbers I believe reflect that it's the 845th saw built that year. Nice machine. I just got a 36" metalmaster from 1942! Here's a link to the PDF manual at vintage machinery...

Found 2 lathes near me.anyone reckognize what they are?

Same answer I posted on the other, nearly duplicate, thread... Man. Neither of those look appetizing. I don't necessarily recognize the make... but the type, yes. One's too small for any work you'd want a modicum of rigidity for, the other is a little bigger but it's a conehead plain bearing...

Anyone reckognize this lathe ? Make model?

Man. Neither of those look appetizing. I don't necessarily recognize the make... but the type, yes. One's too small for any work you'd want a modicum of rigidity for, the other is a little bigger but it's a conehead plain bearing ancient machine that looks like probably a horror show as far...

New Acquisition, a Gebruder Thiel die filer

Yep cutting on the downstroke… it will still pick up the work at times if not pressed down hard. I agree, obsolete machines are some of the coolest. Power hammers, shapers…

New Acquisition, a Gebruder Thiel die filer

I just got this machine in on Saturday... it was shipped cross country to me, from N.C. to WA, via Yellow/Reddaway freight. They actually did a pretty decent job... no damage and a reasonable shipping charge. This is a Gebruder Thiel number 3 die filer. It originally had a jackshaft setup...

Fascinating reading on the company history there. Thanks for the link!

Favorite hand tool brands no longer available

Millers Falls made quite a wide range of tools, it seems. I have a really nice little set of MF hand carving chisels that my uncle gave me a few years ago, some of which I use pretty frequently. I have a 9" MF angle grinder... found it second hand, beastly and still runs well! Heavy thing...

    1910 Atlas power hammer

Nice looking hammer. What's the tup weight? What type of forging will you be using it for?

Pratt & Whitney C clutch removal

Thanks for documenting this. I'm glad the clutch on my 16" isn't asking for attention at the moment! But when it does this should be useful.

    Reviving Reed-Prentice lathe

Link for the manual, if you've not seen it. Somewhat earlier models of the same lathe. Doesn't show motor speed and HP options though. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/2524/26547.pdf I'd imagine that either a 5 or 7.5 hp would be fine. My 16" P&W lathe has a 7.5 hp motor for instance. The...

    WTB: 10" or 12" 4 jaw independent chuck, D1-6

Thanks for mentioning it, I'd be interested but I do already have a Jacobs collet rig myself... love it.
