    ID this Motor!

I'm running on a static phase converter. It is Taiwan. Bport is noisy enough with belts at top pulleys and out of back gear. Probably should not run in high? Bill

    ID this Motor!

Please help me identify this motor. I was told it was a 2HP. It's on a J-Head Series 1 And I don't understand the 2 switches. What is the upper one for? And how do you work it with the back gear on the head? Bill

    Tapping ACME Threads - 3/4-6

Thank You! It is an inch nd a half through hole in the hub of a 5" CI handwheel. I see there is a range of diameters for the drilled hole. I can get a bit that is right in the middle of the range. Is that good practice? Bill

    Tapping ACME Threads - 3/4-6

I need to make 3/4 6 ACME threads through the hub of a few handwheels to accommodate some threaded rod. I'm real dumb, so bear with me. I assume since the threaded rod is RH, that I also need a RH tap (Anyone have one, or know where to get?). I see there are combination rough and finish taps...

How to tap ACME 3/4-6 I need a step by step for tapping a 3/4-6 thread through a handwheel. I hear the resistance is considerably higher than a NPT thread. So take me through it. Roughing tap, finish tap, hole size, fluids, etc. I will be hand tapping. with either a drill press or...

    Just got a 79' J Head - What now?

Sent a photo to Hardinge and it isn't one of their motors. So it may indeed be a 2HP and 2 speed.

    Just got a 79' J Head - What now?

Head has been flipped for better operator access. The box on the side of the motor has two switches, one for high and low and one for on and off and on. Does that mean it is the two speed 2HP? (They did make one and the seller said it was 2HP, but the motor plate is unreadable. And I've heard...

    Just got a 79' J Head - What now?

Here it is in all it's $850 glory. Running when I picked it up yesterday. Has a cheap China vise and I have the oiler. I obviously need collets and mills and setup stuff. And I need power. What's the best converter? I can't read the info on the motor. Seller says 2HP.

Donie, I just acquired a Parker 372 fixed base, swivel jaw vise similar to yours shown on a safe. It is missing the locking pin, but more importantly, it is very hard to swivel. I have to pound on the side of it with a block of wood and a hammer. I would like to take it apart to clean and...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

Hi Mike. I've got two project lathes, both SB. One a 9A, the other a Heavy9 1" collet lathe. Those should work. No shaper yet, put that on the wanted list. I've got a big horizontal 3ph 2 stage compressor. How do you keep that quiet? Bill

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

Hickstick, BTW, what's your name? The biggest problems here are limited space and how to use machinery in what is a very quiet residential neighborhood. Yes we have fire trucks and ambulances and police cars screaming around, it is after all, Detroit. Neighborhoods nearby are much worse. But...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

Keelan, I think you are right, but there is risk everywhere and even legal documents won't completely protect you from it, nor will insurance. I will have all my tools, all my personal property and the house and outbuildings at risk. I will be inviting people into my place to know and use what...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

The building and lot are owned by others and will remain that way. Any equipment an individual wants to use here and not donate is his to take when he decides to leave. We may offer to buy it, or not. This is kind of a pot luck. It's mostly for those that have no shop, but if someone does and...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

Arclight, I've looked at hackerspace. Too involved. Lose the word liability. Forget insurance, it's not in my vocabulary. I don't have any and you can sue all you want, I haven't got anything, not even a bank account or revenue stream. Empty pockets are protection. I don't want ANY monthly fee...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

A bunch of great suggestions. They have convinced me that organization is the enemy of doing things. Insurance? Liability? 501c? Lawyers? Corporations? If ANY of these things were involved I would RUN away as fast as possible. The idea of a few like minded guys sharing info and teaching each...

The Donated Detroit Home Work Shop

Frank, Think smaller. Think NO organization. Organizations become creatures that must be fed money and time. Our local neighborhood organization eats peoples time and money but doesn't do anything. They spent 5 months talking about painting out graffiti and ended up wimping out, saying they...
