Need help working out part geometry with software

I'm the FreeCAD fan boy. Please give us some more info. I'll bet you just need a few tangent constraints on some arcs, then read the dimensions.

    Involute spline generator?

FreeCAD has a built-in involute gear generator that will work for ISO involute splines as well by modifying the addendum, dedendum and root coefficients.

Amateur hour! Looking for some guidance

I believe all of the dual-tumbler 13s (except metric) use the same ratios. Here's mine: Looks like ebay has a repro: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264647589064

Amateur hour! Looking for some guidance

You have a great lathe with a lot of potential. 1983 makes it 17 year newer than mine (1966), but otherwise very similar. Your's has the "Flame Hardened" ways (which is a huge plus) and D1-3 (or is it 4) chuck where mine is threaded. I can tell you that the tailstock should be an MT-3 taper...

Looking for software to make blueprints from solid model

Seconded. The TechDraw workbench is fairly new in FreeCAD (replacing the old Drawing workbench) and understandably is a bit clunky, but the price is right. FreeCAD saves the drawings as SVG which can be imported into many utilities like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator (or Inkscape) to add...

South Ben 13 Feed Screw Cracked

It looks to be the housing that is broken, not the lead screw. That and the fact that the ball crank is broken leads me to believe it may have taken a tumble leading to its retirement. It may be weldable, but you'll also want to check out the whole thing for bends, etc. not to mention the...

    How do you...

Take this with a grain of salt as I've only done a couple of AR barrels (5.56), but I've found that you have a good half inch or so (depending on the twist) of range in the barrel where the gas port can fit nicely in the groove. Instead of a dimple. scribe a line. Now you thread for the...

    I Need A Gear Made...

Thanks you for the comments. I had considered a tailstock on the floating side of the arbor, but it was for a different indexer and was too short. I considered cutting a block to the right size for a spacer for the short tailstock, but wrote it off as unnecessary; perhaps I should have. At...

Need a Tig welder near Austin that knows what he is doing

0.1405 is close to 9/64. I use a 1/8 center-cutting carbide endmill then a 9/64 chucking reamer. The endmill ensures a straight cut even if the original hole was off center. The chucking reamer ensures that the hole doesn't go oversize like a 9/64 EM might.

What is Windows 11 doing to your CAD/CAM software

    I Need A Gear Made...

I calculated a total depth of cut from Machinery's Handbook, then backed off by about a third. After getting all the way around, I measured over wires while still fixtured, then adjusted to the final depth based on the wire reading, and made my final cut all around. I had my 3D printed gear...

    I Need A Gear Made...

It's not a change gear, but an idler gear for the quick-change gear box. (I think) it rides on the lower selector lever and engages various gears in the QCGB depending on which hole the plunger is set into.

    I Need A Gear Made...

My gear cutters finally arrived yesterday. I have to say that I'm impressed with the overall quality. Anyhow, I went to my shop today and decided to attempt my first gear. I did all the math from the Machinery's handbook and I must have missed a decimal point or something as I ended up...

    I Need A Gear Made...

Update: I'm still waiting on my gear cutters to arrive. I guess they are coming from China. Amazon failed to make that very clear. In the mean time, I've created a mandrel from an old AR15 barrel. I had some 4140PH, but it was 2 inch diameter and that would have been a lot of cutting. The...

    I Need A Gear Made...

I've tried to think of various ways of holding a disc in the lathe and they all have problems. I don't have a mag chuck, so I'd need to fixture it in a jaw chuck with the jaws reversed, then the jaws would get in the way. I could drill a smaller hole in the center and bolt it to an arbor, but...

Do you know the specifics on the needle bearing? I assume it is a standard bearing, but I could be wrong. Never mind, I see you posted that in the first post: Torrington GB-88.

    I Need A Gear Made...

I ordered some A36 steel discs from eBay I hope that will be a good enough grade of steel. They are 5/16 thick so I'll need to cut them down to 0.275 which I think would be most appropriately done on a surface grinder, but I don't have one. I'll try a fly cutter in the mill. Next, I need a...
