    DC to AC motorswap

I briefly thought about getting a new DC controller as that would be the easiest solution since I already have everything else in place. And my trusty old 60 yr old 3HP Reliance motor still works fine and has enough power for everything I use it for. Can you recommend a relatively inexpensive DC...

    DC to AC motorswap

I realize this is a very old thread, but if Tom or Hoppy are still reading on here, I'd like to connect with you as my 52 10EE with its original 3hp DC motor is failing and I want to convert to a 5hp 3-phase/VFD setup maintaining the backgear arrangement. Bill

Nice snag Nova! I hope you got the speed chuck that goes with those collets. That would be a nice bonus. Bill

Not sure which "lever bolts" you are referring to. If its the red ball on the top of my Aloris QCTP, or the one with the black ball to lock the carriage ... yes, I made both of those. Its annoying (to me) to have to find the right size wrench to lock either of those bolts down (which you have to...

    Monarch Serial Numbers

John, pretty sure thats been restamped. Monarch never put all that info in the bed stamp ... just "EE 15178" with the numbers the same size as the double-E's. The bed was likely ground at some point and whoever did it had the good sense to at least stamp the serial back on. I have pictures of...

Well my friend, you'd be totally wrong! I have a totally refurbed 1929 Southbend 11x60 to which I have a 2hp 3-phase motor controlled by a VFD. It is WAAAAYYYY overkill for a belt-driven step-pulley style of lathe, but I wanted to make it modern at the time with things like forward, reverse...

You are over-complicating this talking about phase converters and VFDs. 1 hp motors are a dime a dozen. I would not spend $150-300 on a VFD when you can just throw that 3-phase one in the trash and buy a good used 1 HP single phase motor for $50. Just be sure to get the same speed (1,725 or...

Wow, thats in very nice shape. Almost looks like a Wilton machinists swivel bullet copy-cat from the 50's or 60's. Bill

I'm just thinking out loud ... I hope you have a plastic cover or something to protect that VFD which appears to be mounted behind the chuck. If you use any kind of cutting oil or lube when threading, parting, etc, it's gonna fling crap all over that delicate electronic piece. Why not mount it...

    Darex M5 1.125" Chuck

If anyone has the large chuck (model #4250) for a Darex M5 drill sharpener, I'd like to buy it. It's the one that handles drills from 3/4" thru 1-1/8". Looks similar to my 1/2"-3/4" chuck here but with a larger hole. Cheers, Bill

    Bridgeport Power Knee Question

Mine has it. I think it's simply a shoulder bolt that acts as a stopper which the knee will contact when in the fully down or fully up position so the screw doesn't bottom out on either end. I'm going from memory as I'm in FL right now. Bill

    Bridgeport Power Knee Question

No I think I can see how you did it ... run the cable around 2 pulleys mounted at the top of the base casting front and back. Then thread the cable thru the ram dovetail hole there and attach a weight to the rear side of the base. What are u using for a weight? I've got a 12" handwheel I use...

    Bridgeport Power Knee Question

I really like your counterbalanced knee solution! I think I will add that to mine while I wait for a power Z solution as this will make the cranking much easier I would suspect. I totally agree with you about running the knee up to avoid milling with the quill fully extended. Thanks for the...
