I used to install these and replaced plenty of motors. Should be able to get it much cheaper.

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

Great post IMO. I'd love to have a heavier duty machine of a similar footprint to my Sheldon but they are like hens teeth around my area. How would you recommend I set my compound or does it even matter? Thanks

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

I purchased a large wooden ammo box many years ago. It had a bunch of HSS bits of every shape I could imagine. Too many were 3/4" & bigger. I wish I could have met the man who ground so many shapes in these cutters. BTW-MANY had large grooves. I have to assume he was cutting a lot of aluminum...

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

This is prehard 4140. I have both, "how to run a lathe and the 2 machinist handbooks. My finish is rough because I'm making roughing passes.

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

Ever watch "Curb You Enthusiasm"? General consensus is Lary David says things we all want to say but are too polite to do so. The show is hilarious.

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

It may look that way but it's the same cutting edge as out of the package. I used a die grinder to lose the leg and front relief but that's all. I finished the front relief with a white wheel and honed with an India stone. NOT shown, due to the obvious, is the continuous cutting oil dripping on...

Problem turning 4140 with HSS bits

I just had my best success. I used the Tri-Tool bit I posted about in another thread. I parted off leg and it cut better than any other tool I've tried. No BUE whatsoever and .0150 parts removal was easy. I'm going to put a small radius on the tool and see if it helps the finish even though this...

    Tri Tool bit?

I ground one and they are not easy to grind. Id compare them to Cobalt. I'll try them out. WTFN right?

    Tri Tool bit?

I purchased several of these for almost nothing. Im curious if anyone might know what these are made of. They appear to be focused on machining pipe? If these are applicable to use on a manual mill I will try cutting off the leg. Thanks

I like the tapered isea. I totally screwed the pooch on the first attempt so I'll be doing more 4140 lathe cutting practice 😁

Shrink fit 4140 tolerance recommendations please.

The plan is to not use a press. Hoping to heat the female part and chill the male part and fit them together. This is going to be for a low stress application. I suppose I could just interference fit the parts & use red Loktite.
