    Knurling - how to?

I was running about 250rpm, 0.7mm feed and tailstock, seems i wasn't far off your suggestion :) One pass, full depth, loads of oil - seems any oil works well here.

    Knurling - how to?

They are still coated with oil from knurling, once washed off they are clean and sharp.

    Knurling - how to?

Just an update for closure ;) Finally got back onto this job, rebuilt my POS knurling tool, reamed the joints and fitted turned pins, that got rid of 90% of the slop and it actually works now! First batch done in no time, nice heavy cut with tailstock support...

    Knurling - how to?

HI, yes your reply makes sense, what i tend to do is make the first trial/demo part as low-cost as possible if tooling is needed, as long as quality is ok. Then if job is agreed i can usually get a good idea of qty and repeat frequency then invest where needed. I did have a chat with them...

    Knurling - how to?

Yes,if i had many parts to do then i would not worry about dropping £2-300 on a tool but this is a low volume part so makes sense to get it done with low outlay. I will look for a better low-end clamp type tool with wheels of a pitch suited to this job, no idea what pitch my wheels are - so...

    Knurling - how to?

Thanks all, I don't usually post much here as I know its a pro site and i'm far from pro ;) But sometimes you need to ask the experts I think. I can modify the part for tailstock support and cut off later, I also looked at Quick tooling but the cost is way above this part as repeats are going...

    Knurling - how to?

Hi all, I have a possible repeat batch-job coming up but need to knurl around 75mm of an 8mm shaft. I had a try this morning as not really done any before :rolleyes5: , i have a clamp type tool and tried the fitted wheels first, these were the medium of the three provided but although it did...

    Small shop coolant options...

Interesting, not heard of that fluid. The UNIST 2210AL is totally vegetable/biodegradable and supposedly does not affect the skin etc, time will tell.

Yes to the WD, i only use it normally for wiping machines down and the odd squirt if i'm turning a bit alu and its gets gummy. Good to hear your results on the UNIST fluids.

    Small shop coolant options...

The UNIST 2110AL looks good so far, much thinner and 'wetter' that the previous lube, had to dial the FogBuster way down to stop a flood :) No mist visible so presume its pretty safe, no smell either. Will see how or if it dries on the mill bed, documents say it does not dry at all. Thanks for...

Thanks, I'll try the Unist option first and see how it plays out, it's used neat so will work out more expensive but i only have MQL on one mill (only have one mill :( ) and i use about 3/4ltr per year at present.

    Small shop coolant options...

Yeah, thanks guys, the health aspect was a major concern with WD The Nist 2210AL says its harmless so i'll order some and try it.

Thanks, thats something that i can get in the UK at a reasonable price, have enquired about the 2210AL which seems the right flavour.

    Small shop coolant options...

Thanks, got a reply today, smallest qty they do in their recommended product (MicroTol Fa20) is an 18kg can at £250 + £40 delivery + VAT so only £396 LOL I'll give up and try WD40 I think, I did email Hench/FogBuster and they did have customers running WD so it won't harm the unit it seems...

Thought so, this sort of stuff is impossible in the UK :( We get so little choice or high costs.

Thanks guys, i used WD before but from an aerosol which was £££ after a while, so if i got this... and filled the fog buster up, it would work? I keep the air volume reasonably high to clear chips as no flood to wash them away, hopefully that won't matter?
