Checking and improving fit of NPT female pipe threads

For whatever reason, I cleaned the extra Korean flange of the paint at the f threads applied a thin coat of red Dykem, and allowed it to dry. The tap, a new Cleveland, was inserted clean yet dry and by hand it went all the way (ergo about 10 threads). Noticed the tap appeared to contact the...

Checking and improving fit of NPT female pipe threads

There is a possibility the fitting will be import but purportedly will be "better" if we invoke the fire sprinkler FM stamp. This will require ordering in advance and shipping in, no jumping in the shop truck to get some fittings from local supply house. As it is, we see the fittings are...

Checking and improving fit of NPT female pipe threads

Dimension the problem? Since a lot of pipe installation is to make almost all the male pipe threads (except for nipples) and purchase the fittings, would like to know if a short involvement with a new HSS pipe tap would improve the subsequent fitment? While gaging may also be the answer, not...

    Quill lock 'normal position'

Had the opportunity to be one of the first visitors to a local machine shop that had recently closed. There were several vertical mills, mostly all mfg by Bridgeport. A few lathes, surface grinder, universal tool sharpener etc also in the shop. All machines were reasonably cleaned and the...

Tapping quite a few holes in a flat bar of hot rolled steel

Having the three types of tooling on hand...a question has arisen. The mill will place the tool (spiral pointed tap or the other one the spiral tap) directly over the center of the completed 27/64 drilled hole. And this project is strict on the layout thus a vote for the mill vs the drill...

Tapping quite a few holes in a flat bar of hot rolled steel

The drilling and the tapping (using the tapping head) went quite smoothly - me thinks the Drill and Tap DARP was the most straightforward. The other issue is the strict layout tolerances on the hole placement. Which is not really related to the tapping. Thanks for the assistance!

Tapping quite a few holes in a flat bar of hot rolled steel

Took on a fab job for drilling & tapping 36 (thirty six) 1/2-13 holes in piece of 5/8" thick hot rolled plate: Flat Bar Dims 4" wide by 75" long by 5/8" thick. Plate is about 55ksi yield - meets A36 as well as Gr50. Cold Roll too much $ as material is only 12' long, drop is too big. ~~~~~~~...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

I noticed I had been reading 'similar title' books from google, for example one was a treatise from Brown&Sharpe, but they were somewhat older publications (and although informative, had little info re this question about positive rake angles). Found a good condition *hardbound 3rd edition...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

Thought I would update. Other than misc testing, the first job for the machine is making bus bar for a electrical panel that is shaped like an L (angle). Said angle has unequal leg lengths and unequal leg thicknesses; fixture and the machine made the job from a 6061 piece: an item of beauty...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

Made the new lens on the knee sight glass with a piece of 60 mil acrylic and added some Mobil DTE to the knee. Good news the sight glass has no leaks. Not so good was the lack of any X or Y or Z action on the knee. Turns out a long splined shaft (about a good 4') with a tag "Cinci Coolant...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

Perhaps my post 'didnt post' 1. The electrical. All there is a sealtite to the motor but looking at manuals all that typically appears is Stop On and some have a switch for coolant - but I cant see any coolant pump 2. Backlash knob. Looks like this machine has this feature - see attached...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

The only electrical that goes to the motor is a piece of Liquid Tight Flexible Metallic Conduit (lingo "sealtite") that is attached to the 5 HP GE three phase motor. And three insulated #12 stranded copper wires (hots)and a ground. From watching asst'd 'machinery vendor for sale Horizontal...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

Mill hauled and made it with no fuss using a 4500# machine to load it on the truck bed and same capacity to unload it. Getting ready to power it up and has minimal electrical - just a whip to the motor. No motor starter w overload. Any opines if I should bother to get a Jog feature? I...

Cincinnati Horizontal Mill (identification assist and recommendations)

Happened upon a horizontal mill manufactured by Cincinnati. Am limited in knowledge and information - the 'deal' is being made by way of this picture where it can be seen the handle is broken (at what I perceive as a speed changer). Tooling is limited to a few cutters. If someone can...
