DIY optical tool setter for my lathe

Repeatability of the mount is in the 0.01 mm range. The whole contraption has to be removed during work (3 bolts M6) Nick

What makes the Biax scraper so "unique"

Only one of two! ;) The Renz scraper is quite similar, but way cheaper. Worked with one and had nothing against it. Nick

    M13 x 1.25 thread obsolete?

M13? OMG! M14? Rare! Go M12. Your imperial stock of 12.7 mm would be too small for M13 (without looking up the tolerances). Construct metric, use metric stock. Nuff said. Nick

    O.T. Weird Part Names.

Have to extend that: In Bavarian, "Fotze" has two meanings. The one Zonko thinks it is (and he is right for north of Germany) but it also means (bad) mouth. So in Bavaria (and I think most part of Austria) we say "Halt deine Fotze". It simply means "shut up". It is rude, but not at the upmost...

How long SHOULD it take to make 200 of this part?

I'm very well aware of that this can save time. But still, use as many tools as possible in one op. So facing, OD turning and parting off is ONE tool (grind your own, it s worth the time) and a center drill for the chamfer. No tool change, but 4 steps done in one op. It would really pay off to...

Booked the Antonow An-225? I dislike answers that are no answers. Nick

Really that cheap? Not that I don't believe you. But it sounds cheap to me. Nick

How long SHOULD it take to make 200 of this part?

I don't see why you had to chuck the part 5 to 6 times. 1. op: Face off, turn recess, center drill for chamfer, part off 2. op: Center drill, bore, tap. Even if you break up op 2 in 3 clampings, that only makes 4 overall. If you use a stepped drill, you could save one tool change. Facing, OD...

A Japanese gets asked: "Do you have elections?" He turns red and answers: "Yes, evely molning", Nick

Calculated Industries Launching New Machinist Calc® Pro 2 at IMTS

Why did they label the buttons "IPM" and "IPT"? Are they trying to bring back inches to the rest of the world? Aren't there more generic names like "Vf" and "fz"? And with the materials-DB, I expect I'll have to learn the US names. Looks like a leap backwards to me. I have to Calc Pro and I...

CNC Buy first or go to school?

I know, everyone learns different. So if you know how you learn best, you also can decide wether to take classes or not. For me, it looks like a waste of time and money to go to school for 7 months and learn how to CNC. I have bought my CNC, bought a stupid training software, sat down on my...

Pigment Colors for Printing Your Surface

How about using Ammonium iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II) as pigment? If it burns, it can produce cyanhydrogen, cyanides and nitrogen oxides. Nick

What paint do you recommend for a lathe reconditioning?

I only use 2 component PU paint. The brand I use is MIPA, maybe only available in Germany/Europe. Suggested use is tractor / truck / machinery. Nick

Pigment Colors for Printing Your Surface

I have: 1) Elch (Germany) 2) Diamant (Germany) 3) Some ancient Ex-GDR 4) Dykem 5): Home brew 1): Worse than Diamant. I'll use it up for roughing 2): Quite good for roughing. Easy to use. Not enough contrast for fine work. 3): A bit more contrast than Diamant. I see no gain in using it. 4)...

    A question about Granite

May I re-quote from your first answer in this thread? I have no dog in this fight wether it is granite or not. For me, it is just called granite. First, because most people can't distinguish it (including me), second, because granite is synonym for a hard stone for most of us and third it is...

    A question about Granite

Googling what "Diabas" is, it comes out it is a synonym for "Dolerit" and "Mikrogabbro". All classified as vulcanite and basalt. Not granite. If I look at that same site (Mineralienatlas - Fossilienatlas) for granite, I get over 60 different types. And all are plutonite. Nick

    scraping an angle plate

That is the gizmo, just lacking the rack. Now they have to sweep it to get the lowest reading. Nick
