    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Jumper seems to have worked. No failures to start during a short work session. Will know better after a few days use. Thanks, Rick

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Like this. I can put the contactor arm back in place, for "safe keeping". But, if there is a fix that gets the relay working properly, I'd rather do that. Rick

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Not entirely clear on what you are seeing. Here are better photos of my wiring and contacts. The unraveled bare copper wire appears firmly connect to the arm. If I can get the rely working reliably by rewiring, I sure rather do that than bypass it. Rick

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Thanks, Cal. I do not change directions much at all. I think waiting for it to come to a complete stop before reversing would not be a problem. But, it is possible to do that by accident. Just so I know the risks, what are the consequences should that happen? Would jumping as in the photo...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I am having trouble with the AP relay again. I've reviewed this thread and the linked issues. I've cleaned the relay in every way I can think of. Photos inserted below. This has not fixed the problem. In the past, this did relieve the problem for a time but it seems to be worse than before...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I check operation of this relay, the AP Relay. I actuated the first time the drum switch was rotated to forward and the spindle turned, but then subsequent drum switch rotation it did not (neither). Then I pushed the relay with a wooden dowel and tried again. I began actuating every time...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I get what Tony is saying about how to check the voltage across a switch. This means I will power up the lathe with the drum switch removed, in order to access the switch contacts. That will take some care as my only access to the drum switch is by leaning over the bed, quite close to the...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Pulled the C1, C2 and C3 wires from the DC Panel and labelled them. Did a continuity check from each labelled DC panel wire to the drum switch. Labelled the drum switch wires accordingly. Reassembled switch into headstock and powered it up. Same behavior. First time rotating the drum...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Yup, got there. I see a corrosion problem on the three things in the upper right corner. I've found the labelled terminals at the bottom and will go after chasing down as you have described. I'll spend more time with the numbering at the drum switch to be sure I have it clear. Thanks...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

The drum switch has wires with metal tag numbers, 1, 2 and 3. Red one, #1 & #2 Black ones #1, #2 and #3.

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Where is the DC control panel? I have a full sized hardcopy of the wiring diagram, part of the manual ordered from Monarch. It doesn't identify anything as DC control panel. I have the front door off. Is it inside either of the end doors? Rick

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Yeah, I find that curious too. They show up as links/URLs on my display and clicking on them brings them up. I've never been inside before on this lathe. Where is the controller? Front panel off, wiring box exposed. Wiggled each one, nothing seems loose here. I can't match any of the...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Took a bit more prying but it came out. Cleaned the contacts and there is continuity between terminals C3/C3 on one side and C1/C2 on the other. Reassembled, but did not correct the intermittency. Any point to and would it be safe to turn the lathe on and try rotating the drum switch while...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

Got the screw out but the plate is stuck, by paint? Been tapping on it but hasn't budged. Tried some gentle prying, no movement. Rick

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I can probably do that, but I don't even know which leads or where. I haven't opened the back to expose any leads if that is where.

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I'm not clear on what you mean by the switch comes out. I see what appears to be a roll pin on the shaft in the left photo. Is that the roll pin you are referring to? The switch has to come out the back and from the drawing I have it appears either a roll pin or set screw has to come out in...

    Intermittent Drum Switch Operation

I have a 1946 MG 10EE. Recently, the drum switch operation has become intermittent, meaning it does not turn on to run when the drum switch is rotated either left (forward) or right (reverse) at times. It can be very intermittent in that it will run at times and not run with repeated attempts...

SB 9/10 Cross Slide or Compound Handle Needed

Found several on eBay. My friend has purchased one. Might take some additional work in the form of shimming. The only ones available look to be from newer lathes and have a recess for the "round" nut. My friend's was not recessed but I feel confident that we can make it work. Thanks, Rick
