    FS: South Bend 16/24 Lathe

Since I'm sort-of-local to this machine, I'll comment. I think the market for South Bends of any size is firmly in the hobbiest category. Your lathe, because of it's size, isn't as useful to the typical hobbiest as the smaller ones. I don't think they are as sale-able. The only way someone...

Is there a tailstock? ...nice looking SB10 behind it, btw.. Josh

    9A Foot Brake Spindle

Well, call me crazy if you want. I thought mcruff might like to see an example of how one works. Without seeing how yours works, I can draw no direct comparisons. However, the one in the '55 PM article requires no modifications whatever. The bracket slips under the motor foot and uses the...

    9A Foot Brake Spindle

Go to Google Books and search for the April 1955 issue of Popular Mechanics. On page 205 is an article detailing how to build a brake for lathes. Two variants are shown: a manually activated brake (pull a cable) that could easily be made into a foot operated brake, and the same unit activated...

    Misc. Nichols Parts For Sale

Hello all, I have to add my two cents to this. First, on the subject of pulleys: it is true that the manual commonly available (which seems to be a fairly new one) shows both pulleys having taper-lock hubs. However, there have been many sightings of motor pulleys that are keyed and secured...

Nichols Tool Room Mill for parts

So what are you going to do with it now? I'm still in the market for parts, just not the vertical head. Regards, Josh

    Interesting Horizontal Mill

Looks like a Whitney (not Pratt & Whitney) which was the predecessor of the Nichols. There was a picture here on the board some years ago; can't seem to find it now. Josh

    Lathe Notes Vol 2

Irving, Lathe Notes Vol. 2 mentions Cheltenham Works, Ltd. three times. Page 5 has a very shot paragraph describing the bed design of the "Relmbee." No illustrations. Pages 10-13 discuss the "Relmac", "Relminor", and "Super Relm". Line drawings of each accompanies the text. Pages...

    SB Shaper oil pump (in)stalled

It may be worth mentioning that the plumbing in my shaper doesn't match the flow diagram. One needle valve controls flow to the crank slide and left ram way (when viewed from the front), while the other controls flow to the bullgear and right ram way. This has made it really hard to adjust the...

    SB Shaper oil pump (in)stalled

Rob, Do you have a copy of the army manual? If not, a copy may be found at http://www.eurospares.com/shapers.htm It shows an exploded diagram of the oil pump. Fist off, check the flow adjustment valves to make sure that they are on. When they're full on, the screw slots are vertical (at...

Wanted - 1-1/4" arbor for Nichols Horiz. Mill

I have an OEM 1" Nichols arbor. As Greg wrote, the head is cross-pinned, the pin being driven by cap-screws in the spindle nose. The pilot is 9/16. It's pretty short; about 7 inches or so. I'd be happy to take measurements (or pictures) if you need them. Josh

    Need Nichols step pulley set

Rich, I've been searching for pulleys for over two years now. Occasionally they DO turn up, but you must be careful because there were several different styles over the years. If I remember the photo of your machine correctly, it's a newer unit that requires the 5-step pulleys. These use a...

    1" Spindle horizontal mills

Rich, Do a search here on PM for "Nichols" and you will find quite a bit of recent discussion about your new mill. It is possible to replace the air feed with lever or screw feed. A manual may be found at: http://www.d-and-d.com/NICHOLS-mill/MANUAL/index.html Josh

    9" Junior on Craigslist

This one may be of interest to someone west of the Rockies. The drive looks shop-built, but otherwise faily complete from what I can see in the pictures. No affiliation, etc. 9" Junior

    Nichols Hand Miller

I'm skeptical about the 3-step pulley at Plaza. The Nichols manual states that the pulleys on intermediate and high speed models were made in two sections: a large 3-step section and a small 2-step section. It doesn't say if the two-section pulleys use the same mounting hardware as the...

Greg, your 30" table has me drooling.... I think it even more important now that those of us who need parts compile a list, and I think that best done in email. Josh
