So I bought this lathe. All kinds of dirty is right. I've been spending a little time now and then getting it situated and running. I've taken care of a couple of immediate issues, but haven't had a chance to evaluate wear. One issue that I can see but haven't delved into is there seem to be...

Storm Mfg. boring drill/machine info needed!

I just acquired one of these Storm borers. The links to the PDF of the manual/brochure appear to be dead. Is there any chance of reviving them? piperbill

    K O Lee T&C Grinder

Thanks, Mike. They actually DO have downloads of the parts lists. on another note: I'm simply curious. The 6060 series grinders have operating controls on the rear of the machine. There are handwheels to move the table in or out as well as traverse. Why would you want to run the machine from...

    K O Lee T&C Grinder

I just picked up a K O Lee tool and cutter grinder. It is a model B6055HD, which to me looks identical to a 6062. Does anybody know the difference? It's in good shape overall, but one problem I have to deal with is that the handwheels on either side which raise the head have suffered from...

Your lathe is a 3C. Look here for more info: Page Title Bill

    WTB: P&W 3PO collets.

I don't know what the 3OS collets were originally for. The body diameter is .589", the OAL is 2.094", and the threads are 26 tpi. They do work in my lathe, but would need a different drawbar. Bill Thomas

    WTB: P&W 3PO collets.

Bump. I've found out that there's another collet as well that I could use: the P&W 3OS. I'm looking for either type. Bill Thomas

Specs For Pratt & Whiney #3 Lathe Spindle

It was when I got a great deal on a box full of 3-PN collets that I discovered that my lathe is the earlier type which takes the smaller 3-PO collets. At first I thought I would attempt to alter the spindle to take the bigger collets, but then I realized that dimensionally that wasn't possible...

Specs For Pratt & Whiney #3 Lathe Spindle

I just got a very good deal on a Bison live center for the lathe from Ebay. It came with a #1 Morse taper. A #1 Morse taper is .5986"/ft. A #4 Jarno is .6000"/ft. I couldn't really feel any wiggle with the center in the tailstock ram, but it wouldn't lock in place. I chucked it in the T&C...

Specs For Pratt & Whiney #3 Lathe Spindle

Wow, I found something out last night: The spindle is set up for collets with a .600" bore. Well the step inside is actually a sleeve, which I pressed out last night by mistake. The actual bore of the spindle nose where this sleeve sits is just under 13/16". The sleeve OD is .6830". There is a...

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

Well, I have to admit, it broke because of operator error. I got two boards wedged in the outfeed side and locked up the feed solid. The belt that runs the drive didn't slip, so the shaft was the weak link. Bill Thomas

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

Yeah, the drive is a torque multiplier. The input shaft is .500" where it goes through the eccentrics. The output shaft is 1.25". That little half inch shaft is running all that gearing which in turn is rotating four steel rollers 24" long while the cutters take off a maximum of 1/4" thickness...

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

The internal housing's cover is machined on the inner end of the output shaft. It's a flange with a shallow step to locate it and 20 holes for the machine screws that hold it together. In the center there is a recess for the bearing on the end of the input shaft. I figure having two rows...

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

Yes, that was a question. There's actually a fiber washer between the shoulder of the shaft and where the eccentrics sit, so there's room for about a 1/16" radius. I did my best to avoid a sharp corner there. Of course, it was made in 1946 and has planed how many thousands of board feet of...

Specs For Pratt & Whiney #3 Lathe Spindle

Thanks, I learned to scrape from one of the best: Steve Thomas. A few years ago I had the chance of a good deal on a K O Lee tool grinder. It was one of those ridiculous buys. I hardly ever use it, but every once in a while it's very nice to have. I'm making centers and trying to get collets so...

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

The turning tool is a Komet. They're very good, but not common. Bill Thomas

    Interesting Cycloidal Drive

I thought it would be of interest to forum members: I have a big Whitney woodworking planer. Recently a couple of boards got jammed in the planer and the input shaft to the feed gearbox broke. Since the planer was built in 1946, I knew there was no way I could get outside support, so I waded in...
