Advice: Re-scraping a diamond bedded surface plate

Without derailing into the details and difficulties of building your own Autocollimator, I would mention that my Nikon's use a single micrometer on the graduated reticle that moves it at a 45° angle to the X and Y planes. You can't do both measurements simultaneously, but it greatly simplifies...

Advice: Re-scraping a diamond bedded surface plate

This seems like the ideal job for a metal planer. A sturdy one can make a cut deep enough to get under the embedded diamond, cleaning the surface and avoiding excessive tool wear at the same time. Not many of those machines around, and I'm not sure how valuable a cast iron plate is where you are...

oversized inch standard with micrometer. How can i get it corrected?

I'm glad @michiganbuck suggested it first, my hackles were raised reading this post. Those standards Mitutoyo includes are ground to extremely tight tolerances, I really question the possibility that it is the problem unless it is corroded or otherwise damaged. Compared to 3 rando micrometers in...

    Inductive Probe Compatibility

It was my question too. Neat machine! Yes, the double action is much nicer than the Mahr unidirectional design. I'm glad I didn't try to take mine apart, sounds almost as unserviceable as I suspected. I have a 2P and a 10P spring version.

    Inductive Probe Compatibility

An impressive effort, but kind of proving my point. Most people (myself included) are better off using a compatible probe, and anyone who may be using incorrect probes that somehow seem to work, should verify it is really working as designed by taking measurements of calibrated references...

    Used Biax BS-40 maintenance advice

I'm saying, you don't need it and it does nothing for the performance. Remove it and don't ever think about it again.

    Used Biax BS-40 maintenance advice

As I warned and mentioned, that cap is for radio interference suppression and comes from a time where analogue radio broadcasts and motor generated interference were a thing. Unlikely that your neighbor is going to call the FCC to complain that your scraping is disrupting his Atari 2600 game...

    Early electronic metrology tools

So what is it you want from us? Anecdotes of the first electronic tools we used? Random stories by a few guys bored enough to humor you are no more reliable than the vague claims made by manufacturers. I've seen some pretty primitive stuff on the second hand market, but good luck dating things...

    Early electronic metrology tools

First posters... It's an interesting subject, there has never been a time in the world where more knowledge was easier to access with so little effort. Research isn't just asking other people to go through the effort of documenting things for you. Google "history of electric metrology" and work...

Options for/possibility of in-house CMM calibration

Really nice stuff. I knew about their laser interferometry gear, didn't realize they had such a complete suite of machine measurement gear.

New Featherweight Prism Design in the Works! 12" Length.

Since I'm making you deep dive into fontagrophy... The spacing between letters is called kerning and is usually automatically set. However it isn't always perfect when certain letters are next to each other and for important things like a logo or labels is usually hand tuned by the typesetter...

New Featherweight Prism Design in the Works! 12" Length.

The 'small-caps' is usually a checkbox in the advanced font settings. I use Adobe Illustrator and Fusion 360, so I can't give you firsthand instructions on how to enable it in your software, but if you have trouble PM me and we can work together to get you a DXF outline you can import to your...

New Featherweight Prism Design in the Works! 12" Length.

Okay, it looks like you are using the "Open Sans Soft Bold" font. Small-Caps is a font feature where instead of using lowercase letters (which has the 'g' with the descender that's causing the issue) it uses smaller versions of capital glyphs. I don't have that font, but here's what I'm talking...

New Featherweight Prism Design in the Works! 12" Length.

It looks like the font size of "Weight" is smaller than the other text. I'm suspecting it is due to the descending "g" making it more difficult to fit, but I'd suggest resizing the others to match or seeing if 'small caps' are available for your font which should allow consistent font sizes...

    Fixing torn plastic case

That is exactly the type of case I believed you were describing. They are almost always for stainless steel tooling, so they are not as concerned with rust and it allows very compact and convenient packaging. Again, to my surprise, at least in the past, Starrett was offering that packaging as a...

    Fixing torn plastic case

Pictures help in making clear what your issue is. It sounds like you are talking about vinyl sleeves. Pretty sure Starrett sells replacements for still in production products, the Mitutoyo items that use vinyl sleeves are close enough to the Starrett in design that you can use the Starrett...

    Homebuilt CNC in Tokyo

Sorry, I don't know of any. But I sort of remember seeing a YouTube of a very fancy maker space somewhere in Tokyo with a medium sized CNC amongst other things. Mine still is in parts and not really suitable for wood. If you want one to offer as a service, the Shapeoko stuff is a pretty good...

Can this precision level be calibrated?

I did not realize this as the necked section is hidden by the mount, but I can confirm you are correct. Bubble adjustment was made by inverting the level and tilting the bubble to the non-adjustment side. Small amounts of air can be added by raising the adjustment end to be higher (again, while...

    Inductive Probe Compatibility

It's an interesting brochure, and I did see a small section where they briefly mention a few probes that may be cross compatible with other brands. Not as well documented as I would hope though and unfortunately not any that I own and could test (I have both Tesa and Mahr meters at this point.)...

Can this precision level be calibrated?

Well the whole secondhand market over here is crazy cheap, but levels in particular seem to be in oversupply. I'm not sure if it is because everyone is changing over to more modern electronic solutions, or if machine setup peaked some time ago and this is the result of a market glut. But if...
