Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

What I did when I got started was to find a local tool rep that can get you tooling within a day or so. Then just buy the tools you need to do each job as they come. Just roll the cost into each job and it hurts less. You also then only have exactly what you need.

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

I am an automation engineer as my day job. Mechanical engineering degree. I CNC converted a PM-30MV with Teknic servos, ballscrews, centroid acorn, a SMW fixture plate, etc. It cost me around $12K all in all. It has the same travels, speed, and power as the 1100MX. Actually uses bigger teknic...

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

Have you seen a SMW shop tour? Saunders makes a lot of money making his fixture plates, mod vises, etc. Not a single tormach is used by even him in production. His Tormachs are all exclusively for his classes. Abom79 just did a shop tour of SMW / NYC CNC, go watch it

    A dodgy slitting job.

I dont have much experience with slitters, but i have much better luck with shallower step-overs and more passes. like a 20 thou step-over (0.5mm) Also I usually run them conventional instead of climb milling. Think more like a table saw or chop saw. Could be totally wrong here, but it works...

How bad is it to use TiALN coating on aluminum parts?

Update: I let'er buck because i had to get the parts done. After ~10 hr of running the flutes just developed an aluminum looking coating. Cant tell if just stuck on or what, didn't try very hard at all to get it off. Didn't seem to affect dimensions on the parts. I was just using WD-40 mist and...

How bad is it to use TiALN coating on aluminum parts?

Ive got some TiALN coated carbide ball endmills I would like to use for some 6061 parts for a rush job. Rush as in they want them tomorrow so it will run all night. I understand TiALN created an aluminum oxide coating when used, and is not recommended for machining aluminum. How bad is it for...

I have a question about facemills

if you go with a 4 blade, and your machine cant handle 4, then you can take two inserts out. Then you can run it like a 2 blade cutter and still be balanced. 4 blade lets you go 33% faster than 3 blade with the same feed per tooth. But it needs 33% more power. I would go with 4 blade

On the hunt - world's best aluminum finishing endmill

idk about that one, but the mentioned YG alupower endmills are awesome in plastic my mill paid for itself making UHMW parts. YG alupower endmills for features, and a nice polished SEHT insert facemill for faces in black delrin my parts look almost glass like, and your mill is probably more rigid...

how to fix chatter in aluminum with extra deep cut HSS - [solved - lower rpm]

cycle is kinda funny too, i rough with a 3/4" shear hog at 5in^3/min MRR and then come in with this guy and go turtle mode. parts are beautiful though, and right in spec going so slow also forgot to mention, i tried going conventional instead of climb milling, but at the 5in/min it didnt make...

how to fix chatter in aluminum with extra deep cut HSS - [solved - lower rpm]

man i love this forum, i learn so much stuff 1600 rpm was still screamy for me winning feeds n speeds 300 rpm (three hundred) and 5 in/min it is whisper quiet and the finish is awesome. basically runs like a bridgeport in low gear, and takes a million years, but it is hugely better than what...

    5in facemill leaving ugly patches

i dont think the part is moving, and have had it happen on multiple different parts, but i guess i cant guarantee it I would think tram, but what i dont understand is why it wouldnt be the full length of the part and not just a patch? I would think since the head isnt moving that the angle...
