    10ee tachometer repair

A bit of a tangent: I looked through the 1931 catalog. Fascinating reading. I noticed a device called a "vacuum tank" and I could not figure out its purpose. It seems to be some sort of a float bowl type of device, but not a carburetor. Does anyone know what it does?

10EE Taper Clamp casting possibility - Martin Model

I would go for a taper attachment clamp if he does one.

Brown & Sharp Toolmaker’s Universal Vice.

It was a joke, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Brown & Sharp Toolmaker’s Universal Vice.

No, no, no, it is not that old! I think that my link is closer to the correct age. My link is from the 1940's, so my vice is 30 years newer. Those 30 make all the difference! 110 years old vs. 80, you are trying to make it seem old. I say this because the nut that locks the tilt is...

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

I have been pondering the Steelman design and I think I understand what it is trying to accomplish. In essence, you are trading off capacitance value with the voltage rating of the capacitor. You are doubling the required capacitor voltage rating requirement for only needing one quarter of...

Brown & Sharp Toolmaker’s Universal Vice.

This is a heavy universal vice made by Brown and Sharp. It has 6” jaws and opens to 3 ½”. It is very heavy, weighs 125 Lbs. It is shown in this document on page 34. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/2185/3624.pdf I am asking $200. I am in Londonderry NH and I really do not want to ship this.

Model K starts, runs for 3 seconds, then motor stops - updated!

To my ear, your motor never came up to full speed. It should have no trouble reaching full speed in 3 seconds unless the motor has a heavy load attached. This is the classic case of a shorted turn in one of the windings. The short acts like a brake on the motor, and it can't spin up to full...

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

I am having some trouble understanding your measurements. In the first chart, it seems that the red trace is way out of its proper phase position. It should be at 120 degrees from the other two phases. This is something that you adjust by varying your capacitor bank. Do you have a link to...

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

The thing about static and rotary phase converters (basically the same thing) is that they are trying to generate the 3rd phase by using capacitors. This scheme requires a balancing of the phase angle and voltage by of the 3rd phase by varying the value of the capacitors. Unfortunately, a...

    Collet, free for postage.

Steve Marquess says that it will fit his Black Diamond, so that is likely the standard. It is in the mail to him, so we should soon know for sure.

    Collet, free for postage.

I don't think that it is a 3C, the diameter is wrong: this is 0.5" and 3C is 0.65". A Black Diamond drill grinder collet is a good bet since no one seems to know the standard that Black Diamond collets conform to.

You got it! Please tell me, what kind of collet it it? Is it some standard size?

    Collet, free for postage.

I have this odd collet that I don't know what it goes to. It is a 3/8" collet with a .5" diameter and about 2" long and 24 TPI thread. It probably goes to some watchmakers lathe. Rather than tossing it out, anyone can have it for postage. This reading is ~0.5"

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

I studied your drawing some more, and you have some mistakes. The drawing to the right is correct, although the two star points can be connected together but it will work the way shown. Wires B4, B5, B6 and B10, B11, B12 are the center of the star and can all be connected together, but are...

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

I would go to your local HVAC supply store and buy what they sell. A place like that will get immediate feedback if they are selling bad stuff. A couple of comments; Years ago I built a 2 HP rotary phase converter. I had a 12" by 12" box filled with AC capacitors. About half were the run...

Full tear down and Rebuild of a 10EE Round Dial

One thing that I notice on the capacitors is the stripe with the negative symbol! These are DC capacitors. These tend to explode when AC is applied ;-)
