Monarch lathe destroyed in Rocky Flats 1957 plutonium fire

Thought this was worth sharing- a government investigation photo of a Series 60 or 61 after being destroyed in the plutonium fire at Rocky Flats, CO on 9/11/57. This machine was surrounded by a stainless steel glove box so technicians could safely reach in through lead-lined gloves to turn...

    Monarch Spindle speed plate

You can get perfect reproductions done, though they aren't cheap. Von Industrial has done a bunch of Monarch tags for Keith Rucker (Vintage Machinery) and others. Not sure about posting links like this, but if you google it, it comes up as the first result.

Parting out Series 60/61 16 by 54 lathe

Ok thanks for posting that, Mike. I think the one I have is slightly cleaner. Very cool side mount wheel setup.

Parting out Series 60/61 16 by 54 lathe

Thanks Mike. Can you send me a picture of the hand wheel along with measurements?

Parting out Series 60/61 16 by 54 lathe

How about the tailstock hand wheel? Is the tailstock a quick-clamp type? If so, I might be interested in the whole thing.

Rockwell carbide grinder parts for sale

I could definitely use the light and possible one of the lower trays that the tables mount on. My grinder has two right-hand trays so the left one is backwards (the scale is on the back). I'm in Arizona so I don't know if the expense of shipping would be prohibitive or not, coming from Canada...

    Series 60 Power Compound Disassembled

Thanks very much! I have learned a lot the last couple of years showing what I'm doing.

    Series 60 Power Compound Disassembled

When I first got it I thought it was a 61 because of the gear box being enclosed, but Monarch confirmed it's a 60.

    Series 60 Power Compound Disassembled

Yeah the crosfeed screw confused me the first time I peaked under the cover on the back- didn't make sense until I realized it had two compounds so the rear compound had it's screw on the left side. Using it is even better than I thought it would. Other than threading, I don't use the compound...

    Series 60 Power Compound Disassembled

Thanks I'm trying to put in a sincere effort as I learn how to do this. I think I figured out the problem with the photos- I'm uploading them as PNG files and the site downsizes them to create JPGs. I'll upload as JPGs myself to keep them larger.

    Series 60 Power Compound Disassembled

Hi all. I mostly post on Instagram and YouTube, but I'm betting this crowd would appreciate seeing this. My 1952 Series 60 has a Power Angular Feed for the compound and I needed to disassemble it for installing my new DRO. My lathe originally had dual power compounds, front and back. Each...

    Series 61 oil drain problem

When I had the front of the gearbox open I spotted it.

    Series 61 oil drain problem

On my Series 60 there is a drain plug under the center of the gear box down into the controls cabinet. Unfortunately they failed to drill a hole in the casting below, so the plug is inaccessible. I took the front plate off and cleaned it out that way.

Did Monarch ever make lathes with larger spindle bores?

Yours is rather large in all respects!

    Monarch lathe to be scrapped

We have very similar machines- 16" Catalog, 22.5" swing, though you have a longer bed and I have the closed gearbox. Once you get it going, you'll be a happy camper! Mine wasn't quite as dirty as yours when I found it, but pretty rough.

Giant Monarch destined for scrap :(

You’re a good guy for helping us out before it melts. This lathe looks the same swing size as mine, but my bed is only 54” between centers. The covers I asked for are taken off with a flat screwdriver so shouldn’t be any problem.

Giant Monarch destined for scrap :(

Hate to see usable machinery go in the melting pot. I’d love to have that large lower door below the gear box. And if it has a cross slide ways dust cover that would be useful to my machine. I’m in Arizona so not sure how far away it is.
