    How did you get established?

I started building cars in high school, and knew of machine tools, but that was about it. I've always enjoying making things and building stuff. About 10 years ago, I was interested in cnc, but scared of a mill and the cost, so I built a cnc plasma table, ran that for a couple years out of my...

    VMC vs CNC Knee Mills

Personally I wouldn't buy a new lathe. There's plenty of really nice used lathes around that size. I had a Cadillac 1440 that was great. There are several Mori Seiki clones. Check out Greer Machinery if you want to look through a dealer. They sell Moris. But for your budget, you should...

    VMC vs CNC Knee Mills

There's a lot of machines that will fit in your garage. I started with a Fadal 3016 and now have a Brother Speedio 700X2. Personally, I'd suggest buying a VMC. You'll want everything they have to offer at some point. I've been in your shoes and basically just further along in your shoes...

Customer requesting discounts / price matching

I definitely agree with you. That’s how I do business. And I’m pretty sure that’s a big reason I get more business. I was just leaving some wiggle room for those that would inevitably say ‘the number is the number, no one exceptions’. But to me that’s stupid. But it may be the way for large...

Customer requesting discounts / price matching

If he doesn't have you do the job the instant you agree to a slight adjustment, he can pound sand at that point. I don't think it's smart to be hard nosed about everything (where people say the quote is the quote, period) as I've had some good work come out of situations where that was the...

Laser engraver for metal - how much for a real tool?

This is due to the type of laser, not the quality of it. CO2 lasers don't really do anything to metal. You can mark some materials like anodized aluminum and turn stainless black, but there's a product called Ceramark that you spray on to the parts first to allow a legible mark. A fiber laser...

    Joining the brother gang

I purchased a 700X2 16k last year and absolutely love it. It's in my garage. I'd love to get a cobot or some sort of automation, but don't really have the volume for it yet. It's an amazing machine. Frank is super helpful and I've had nothing but good experiences with everyone at Yamazen.

    Instagram

Same. Social Media isn't going anywhere in one form or another. Remember all the old codgers complaining about the internet and bulletin boards? I basically started on Instagram and probably 90% of my business comes through there in one form or another. RandomFabrication on IG.

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

100% agree. And while a Robo is most likely the same, I love my Speedio and support being close and readily available was a huge plus for me. However, in hindsight, I wish I would have done it sooner and probably just skipped the Fadal all together.

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

You don't really need to. The best thing I ever bought for my Fadal was the CalMotion. Then you can use any computer and post straight out and run off of any USB stick. The biggest issues with most 'old' machines is getting the archaic 232 bullshit to work reliably and even find computers to...

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

Don't rely on Xometry. All they do is throw out ridiculous jobs. Find the customers yourself and build a base. Don't make some shitty middle man company rich.

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

If you buy a Fadal, just buy the DNC unit from CalMotion. It's the best one out there.

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

Honestly, ebay is probably the worst possible place to buy a machine (unless you happen to find a private listing, then track it down via CL or some other means and make a deal away from ebay). Machine dealers make used car dealers look like saints. I purchased my Fadal off an ad on here. The...

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

Fadal coming out and the Speedio going in. Knowing what I know now, I'd buy a Brother (or Robodrill) to start, even a S2A or S2B, mainly for the parts I do and the parts that most people in a garage would be able to do. You can still get creative and remove the doors if need be. I don't...

Advice needed on buying a new or used Tormach CNC Mill

You just haven't done enough research. A Fadal will 100% fit under a standard door. I got a 3016 in and out of my garage. It will absolutely run circles around any Tormach. You can buy any possible part you would need for it off the internet and lots of people have literally rebuilt them...

Looking for 5/32" Hex, Grade 5 Titanium

I don't think I've ever even seen hex Ti and good luck finding an odd size like that. I doubt that even exists in any amount of quantity unless you're the one having it produced.

    Shop Space in Southern California

I agree with all of the above. I can't stand anything LA. I'm in Tustin, which is fine, but also out of my garage, which is about 550 ft. Any shop space around here is pretty much at least 1500 and like already mentioned, the smaller spaces seem to be even more money per ft so the total ends...
