Measured Thermal Expansion of a 1.25" dia by 10" long Steel Bar in Response to Bare Hand Contact

I'm not going to get to that for a bit. Went out to the far back yard and found a tree laying on my shed. Got a little work to do.

Measured Thermal Expansion of a 1.25" dia by 10" long Steel Bar in Response to Bare Hand Contact

Yeah, the point would be to see how much handling and for how long makes a practical difference; obviously the growth can be calculated at different temperatures. Handling in different ways will affect the outcome, bar shape will affect the outcome, how the item is gripped will affect the...

Measured Thermal Expansion of a 1.25" dia by 10" long Steel Bar in Response to Bare Hand Contact

That's a little under .00002", not .00004" - and I meant a rectangular bar with even near the same cross sectional area, not a thin walled hollow bar. Say ½" by 2½" rectangular bar rather than 1¼" round. The heat needs only penetrate ¼" to soak through rather than ⅝". Plus more surface area in...

Measured Thermal Expansion of a 1.25" dia by 10" long Steel Bar in Response to Bare Hand Contact

The shape of the bar used may affect the rate of heat transfer quite a bit too. I would expect that round is slower to heat than a thin rectangular bar, since the heat can soak the thinner material faster. I have a ½ μ Mahr, maybe I can dig up a similar piece of material and try a couple tests.

New Featherweight Angle Plate in the Drawing Stage. Metrology and Setup Versions to be Made

The thermal expansion should not change the angle unless the temperature of the part is uneven. This is why inspection gear is either always kept in a temperature controlled room or allowed to equalize in temperature for a long period of time before used in a very critical application.

New Featherweight Angle Plate in the Drawing Stage. Metrology and Setup Versions to be Made

I don't think you're going to get anywhere near as good a result with filament as with a good resin printer. Especially so with the newer ones. I've been pretty impressed with the crispness of detail from my resin printer. Mine is an Elegoo Mars 3.

OT- Tour of Ed Pink's race engine shop--soon to be torn down to make a bus stop

Fat chance. I know he has gotten a couple warnings too... As long as you guys can keep it at least medium civil, no biggie. Just don't want endless back and forth, y'know? Rather see none at all, but like Ox said before, nobody wants to have to babysit grown men.

OT- Tour of Ed Pink's race engine shop--soon to be torn down to make a bus stop

Other side gets one it's only fair, as long as neither is crazy out of line. Report is even better, of course. Trying to prevent one or another comment here or there is about like herding cats around here, especially with the somewhat ambiguous rules from upper management.

New Featherweight Angle Plate in the Drawing Stage. Metrology and Setup Versions to be Made

Did you try a different USB stick? I had that problem once, and it was the crappy factory included USB stick that was the problem, not the printer itself.

WTB Aloris CA 2" and 2-1/2" boring bar holders

It worked awesome, I can tell you that. Some of the most solid smaller bars I ever used. The core of the bar in tension and the tubular sleeves in compression. They had a nice assortment of sleeves in thicknesses from ½" to 3".

OT- Tour of Ed Pink's race engine shop--soon to be torn down to make a bus stop

Yeah, both sides let it go now. I generally don't mind one side getting a lick in with the political stuff and the other getting one back. Let's call it a day after that, with a reminder to try to stick to the more relevant topic.

WTB Aloris CA 2" and 2-1/2" boring bar holders

I worked at a place that had a really nice setup for boring with a CA. They had 1½" bars but with a short (around 1" wide) larger diameter flange on the business end, and they used the Kennametal bolt-on heads offset to the front of the bar, so they could be easily swapped out for different...

Who writes the website articles? Are they accurate?

I only use mine for checking parts that come in with no print also. No need for going to the trouble of taking the time using a comparator for most work, and a radius gage is quick and easy.

I wonder if that 2½" isn't a custom that they only make per order. Might be worth a call to find out.

Yeah that's a bit wonky sounding. Then again, I don't find that a whole lot of machining stuff that I read is all that good.

    milling machine bearings

90W is too heavy. Transmission fluid may be too light. What is the manufacturer's recommendation? Most of the time that is something around 30 weight.
