Stainless ok for tool bit holder like this?

no idea why this matters to you that much. nobody uses the term like that? nobody you know, you mean? and i dont care for the jargon of heat treaters, a lot of them dont really understand whats going on and are about 50 years behind current procedures, at least thats my experience. (op, sorry...

Stainless ok for tool bit holder like this?

actually i like to be proven wrong because thats how you learn. in this case, however, please look at some primary literature and you will quickly find that "annealing" is a synonym for "heating" in metallurgy, be it to 100°c to decrease dislocation density (and maybe first precipitation of...

Stainless ok for tool bit holder like this?

should have been pretty clear what i ment. (unfortunately expressions in metallurgy get used pretty loosely, i have to admitt that and often whish it were not the case.) simple, unalloyed steels tend to have an unfavourable hardness/fracture toughness trade off, thats the reason for a light...

    Cryo Drill Bits

first, the notion of somehow dunking parts into liquid nitrogen for a few seconds is popular (e.g. with knife makers) but simply stupid. industrially performed processes include controlled cooling, holding and warmup times of many hours. second, the notion of athermal formation of martensite is...

an electric edgefinder is +/- 10µ (not more acurate than a mechanical) in my experience, provided the parts are clean.

SMALL HOLE / SLOT MEASURMENTS - HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT?

with these find a stack having a medium slip fit, add 2µ and thats your dimension. as to the pins, i wonder what the tolerance on straightness and parallelism might be (unless you just want to stick them in vertically). surface roughness makes a difference also.

    Inspection of bar stock

is that regular photographic paper? surface roughness doesnt matter?

    Inspection of bar stock

imho such inspection doesnt make much sence if the bar is going to get machined. the main thing with bar stock is how dendritic it has become in the center. either you believe the spec or you slice a piece off, grind, polish, etch, etc. optical should be enough.

Alternative Materials to Bronze for high-load bushings... are there any?

(sorry for not having read the whole thread.) find out the exact material pairing. improve from there. there are innumerable bronze alloys. no need to get fancy or into unchartered territory imo.* e.g.: use a harder alloy (some manganese bronze?) and crome plate the pin. also the type of...

    QCTP repeatability expectations versus reality

get a multifix type, then you know what you have. if you care, look up my thread on it, incl. repeatability measurements. however dont forget this will only hold for identical cutting parameters (doc, speed, lube).

i came accross cryo-treated drills 30 years ago. they never caught on. no wonder, the prodedure can take several days if peformed correctly. then coatings started to appear.
