Yes I've slowly been working on it. Got the head removed, and started tearing into the main gear boxes Mostly been lazy and not posting like I should!

Ours are missing that nice tailstock crank, been meaning to make one. It's a pain to man handle that massive tailstock around. Normally push and pull with carriage rapid, but sometime you have to use a pinch bar and it SUCKS

The ones we have at work have war finish tags, so not as old as a true High Duty. Near I can tell the High Duty styling on these larger lathes carried into Pacemaker era.

https://www.purplewave.com/auction/220601/item/DK1992/American_Tool_Works-Machine_Tools-Lathes,_Manual-Iowa We got two of these where I work, great machines. Super super heavy. Note the faceplate drive, carriage about a 5' wide, pictures do not do this thing justice.

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

Lots more cleaning to do here. But looks better minus a few gallons of crud and chips. Thinking to make sure all the lube lines are working properly before removed the saddle from the bed. Kinda in the best position to work on it. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

Got the base of the rotary table off. Kinda surprised the box ways measured about .0005 parallel. Not as bad as I thought they were gonna be Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

Had to move the machine to have space to remove table shafts. Got the rotary table off. Thrust bearing is definitely worn, might leave it as is, but also thinking about scraping it in Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

These nasty bearings cleaned up nice. Cleaning them up and they felt plenty good to be re used Figured out that the quill is moved from outside the headstock. This clamp moves the spindle by a multi pitch screw under the quill. So once I get the jam nut and pin out, spindle bar will...

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

The headstock looked very clean inside so I'm optimistic on the spindle bearings. But yes, this is my main worry as well. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

The retrofit decision comes down to how many bad bearings its got running around in it. If it's a fairly minor effort to repair it as is, I'll do that. But if I gotta spend 10k replacing dozens and dozens of bearings/gear/shaft repairs. Gutting that out, putting in ball screws and drives...

    Project HBM-3" Forges de Gilley

Wow I move slow. After several years, picking up on this project again. Last weekend brought it back into the shop, I moved it outside to make space while I moved a bunch of machines into the shop and set up the gantry crane. Started tearing into it, trying to see how bad it is. Trying to...

Largest PITA was removing the legs from the old beam. They are made out of aluminum, and some asshole decided that countersunk Allen head set screws should hold them in place. They had sized up, and it was a major paid to disassembly. And some threads had to be oversized. Sent from my...

    Pole Barn Machine Shop

Working stupid hours at work, so haven't done any work in my shop for a while. Working 7 days a week 12 hr shifts in a machine shop takes alot of the desire to work in my own shop away. Today moved the drill press a bit out of the way. Not sure if I like that spot, but its easy to move if I...
