    Another tpg question

These are awsome for light turning and boring in most materials: https://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/Family.aspx?fnum=1682&mapp=IS&app=28&GFSTYP=M

    ID grinding hard chrome.

Correct, also the wheel in post 124 is a CBN resin wheel after truing but before opening up with a dressing stick. I have a NR-303 spindle coming, it uses a bigger arbor which tells me the spindle and therefore bearings will be bigger also. It's only about 2mm smaller in diameter than my...

    ID grinding hard chrome.

I found another reference that they recommend 5NQ80-JVQN specifically for chrome, I'm using a 5NQ60-KVQN. Pg 34 here: https://docs.rs-online.com/4f65/0900766b81284f40.pdf Yup, that's it. I saw different references to locate the point on center or slightly downstream, mine's usually closer...

    ID grinding hard chrome.

Thanks, yup saw that, it's Noritake's version of "ceramic alumina" grade. I wrongly stated I was using Norton's 5SG but looking again it's their top of the line 5QN, I found some 20 x 20 mm ID wheels I had to cut down to 1/4" wide from a UK supplier. I think the diamond was new a year ago...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Found this old post, seems to suggest (as does Iscar) that high CBN content inserts will work, another guys says SECO TH1000 carbide also is good: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/threads/turning-chrome-plating.120631/

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Ceramic insert? Got a link? I looked through his vids and couldn't find anything. https://www.youtube.com/@CuttingEdgeEngineering/videos edit: Iscar says their PCBN can be used for heavy interrupted cuts in materials to 70Rc but ceramic is no good...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

I think the 13mm diameter long nose on my spindle plus the fact the bearings in the front of it are only 3/8" x 1/4" aren't helping. They have other spindles that attach to my air motor but they are all close to the ID of my sleeves, I might be able to turn down the OD of one slightly to give a...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Kinda getting off topic a bit but thanks for that, I did my own plating 25 years ago and it was a lot easier to grind, my setup was no where as good as it is now. I think the plate I got is much harder. That fixture with it's "thiefs" is a common setup in the model engine world, attached is...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Yup, my equipment is lacking for sure with the dinky 1/4" arbor wheels. The Ukrainians/Russians are big into model engines, here's a clip grinding a liner on a real machine:

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

I think you're right. I forgot I had a sample that got chromed in a place I could test my KD240 PCD insert and a little came off in a powdery form but the edge was quickly destroyed. Forces were quit high as well and I'd be worried about ruining my parts if they spun in the fixture etc...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

I noticed under a loupe the resin bond CBN wheel looked like the "concentration" of grit was fairly low, maybe 25% of the surface, whereas the metal bond wheel looked like maybe 75%, is that what you mean by "open structure"? The metal bond wheel didn't work, just screeched and didn't cut at...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Ya, it's from my other thread, 1" bore. I asked for about 0.006"/side and got 8, good thing as the last one just cleaned up, the plating ends up thinner at the top and bottom, I even had a few rejects as they didn't plate well at all there. Trust me I've tried everything (except a diamond...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

I don't have access to an EDM but do have a diamond wheel coming, although everyone recommends CBN for chrome. I tried resin bond and metal bond CBN wheels but the Norton 5SG "Quantum" was the best. My toolmaker buddy thought maybe PCD might work, he used Kennametal KD240 grade inserts to cut...

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Took me about 10 hrs. yesterday to grind out 0.005", it's painful. :wall:

Insert for rough turning hard chrome?

Search turned up empty handed. Is there an insert (PCD, CBN etc.) that will cut hard chrome plating? Not looking for a good finish as the parts will be finish ground to size, just want to cut the roughing process down. Am I dreaming?

    ID grinding hard chrome.

I finally got it, figured I'd add a final post to maybe help someone down the road. Grinding hard chrome ain't for sissies, especially with a tool post grinder type setup. Everything has to be a rigid as possible including spindle bearings, sliding elements etc, if anything moves more than a...

Ooops, sorry buddy, I saw "Craftex" and my brain saw a benchtop 7 x 12 at Bust Bee (Canada's Grizzly).

Why do Interapid DTI's read backwards?

Just a 312-B, nothing special: https://shop.idealprec.com/products/brown-sharpe-74-111372-interapid-312b-3-dial-test-indicator-016-range-0001-graduation Helga says you guys get an "F"! Huh?

Why do Interapid DTI's read backwards?

A retired toolmaker buddy gave me a very nice Interapid tenths indicator but it's driving me nuts, why the heck does the needle move counter clockwise as you push up on the stem? I've owned only Mitutoyo and they all go clockwise except one which had a toggle to reverse rotation. Is it a Swiss...

    Sunnen MB-30 honing oil?

Thanks, I tried it tonight and it worked better for ID grinding chrome than either synthetic grinding fluid or water soluble oil.
