Harig 618 manual surface grinder traverse sluggish

Last week when I taught a class in Roscoe IL the foreman in their scraping department used to scrape and assemble for the Harig factory when they were still in business. They rebuild Harig grinders there. They had me come in and teach their apprentices and show them how to scrape with the...

Harig 618 manual surface grinder traverse sluggish

On those small grinders tighten the left side bolt tight and put a lock washer on the right side and leave it looser. Tighten the right side bolt until the lock washer is pulled down about 1/2 way. If you removed the mag chuck, clean up the surfaces and oil the bottom of chuck so it doesn't...

A Scraping Newbie Has The First Of Many Questions

Your part looks a bit high in the middle. The bottom side more then the top one. You need a smaller stone too. People should check the stone as many are not flat unless you bought some ground stones. The Norton MS-24 tapered slip stone that I buy buy the case, most are not flat. I can lay...

A Scraping Newbie Has The First Of Many Questions

Having the right tools and not trying to re-invent the wheel is the key. So many think they have a new way, but I tried many of there "new ways" when I was a rookie 55 yrs ago. The other thread the OP is using a Tube type Anderson hand scraper that I have seen used, They are horrible in my...

A Scraping Newbie Has The First Of Many Questions

When a student I'm standing behind can't get more points then 20 PPI. I tell them they need to be a sniper shooting one shot at a time at the target. Not machine gunning it. Most time people scrape the diagonal line scraping high and low spots and expect the PPI to get better. In the class I...

how long to scrape a dovetail slide, like a compound?

I don't like the adapter that comes with it. That makes the handle to stiff if you usea Sanvik insert. Keeith Rucker cad camed the handle and you can make one for under $50.00 - The Dapra one is over $150.00. You can made 2 lengths handles for the price of a new one.

how long to scrape a dovetail slide, like a compound?

To answer your question on time - I would think I could scrape one your size a day and 1/2 or 10 to15 hours. It being your first one 30 hours sound good. I don't want to hurt your feelings, but you need to learn to scrape the checkerboard pattern as it will look better and speed up your work...

First off, thank you for the photo's, you did a nice job documenting your work. Last week when I taught the Class at All World Machinery in Roscoe IL 2 of the students who work for Bourn & Koch of Rockford IL brought that same Anderson Scraper. The blade was sold flat tip and the sides were...

how long to scrape a dovetail slide, like a compound?

I'm going to go a bit off topic now and tell you about the tools I would use so other readers can learn. Bob I never scrape a 3/8 wide dovetail with a power scraper. I use a hand scraper with a 5/8" wide blade ground at a 60 or 40 radius blade (Biax 15-150 or a # 15 blade) I grind the top...

how long to scrape a dovetail slide, like a compound?

Before I answer I want to here more about you and your ability. A couple of things first. You say you used a "tubular scraper" Anderson makes a tubular scraper and in my opinion it is a lousy scraper to scrape anything accept paint. They are aprox. 24" long or more with a round wood handle...

The machine I owned was very old and the head had a motor built inside it. I had to buy the spindle bearing from an surplus vintage bearing company. It had been reconditioned because it was so old.

I introduced Charbonnel to the forum scraping world after Tom Lipton of You Tube fame under his company name Ox tool. He took one of my CA classes and he introduced me to it. His wife is an artist and paints. He saw her using it and tried it. He used it straight, but that's to sticking in...

A Scraping Newbie Has The First Of Many Questions

If you have my DVD then you saw how top put on the yellow highlighter, Did you buy some Yellow or Red Charbonnel? You can't leave it wet or sticky. After you wipe off the Windex diluted highlighter, wipe 99% of it off with a dry rag. Then wipe it off with a dry ungloved hand to feel the dirt...
