Looking for a 4”, 5”, or 6” Lathe backing plate for an old Van Norman 10” dividing head. The backing plate needs a 2” ID - 5 TPI thread engagement to mount onto the spindle.
Thanks

Hello all,
I’ve had a VN 10 divding head in storage for some years now. Today dusted it off for use and discovered it has a much larger spindle adaptor than my 5c collets.
The Manual says it’s likely a #2 collet size. However the spindle head piece looks nothing like a 50 taper collet- it’s...
Hello All,
Well, after fixing an electrical cord problem in my model 90 Servo table power unit, it has let out its magic smoke. So Wondering what is a decent replacement? I see 140, 150, and 200 units available- but no clear assessment of which one to go with.
My mill is a 1980’s Bradford -...
My Bridgeport clone Servo 140 table feed(right hand side drive) lost its power cord yesterday. One of the wires pulled loose from the bottom of the housing.
I can’t figure out how to remove the innards without damaging the parts. I loosened the bottom housing. Took out the four screews, pulled...
Regarding SB 10 SN 135111 purchased by the navy in October, 1942, and sent into the Pacific in spring, 1943, still trying to identify the Stamping “MA E127” found on the tail stock end of the ways.
We believe “MA” is the abbreviation for ‘Marine Aircraft’ the standard WW2 nomenclature for all...
We have an old SB 10” lathe at the Hawaii Railway Society that has some strange markings on the bed that we would like to decifer. Basically this lathe was surplussed out of the Pearl Harbor naval shipyard machine shop, a loong time ago. New in 1942 and donated to the HRS sometime in the past 30...
I volunteer in the back shops for the Hawaii Railway Society, where we have an old 18” x 72” Cincinnati tray top lathe (with an old school lantern tool post and HSS tooling), that I occasionally use. Currently we are replacing a traction motor on a WWII vintage GE 44 tonner road (locomotive). My...
Hello All,
Iam thinking about ordering a production run of new VN C collets and maybe arbors for the VN 12. Does anyone need collets or arbors? If so,please let me know what sizes are the most important. You could reply here or via PM. These will be aerospace precision and likely made with...
Finally getting around to rebuilding the vertical head for my Burke #4 mill. It’s been disassembled far to long... so I’ve forgotten some key details.
For instance, I don’t remember the spindle being a press fit in the lower bearing, however it certainly is now, with the new bearing.
Wonder...
So one of my scraping projects involves restoring an early Atlas 7 shaper. Pretty soon I will be putting it back in operation. First test will be to see if it machines a flat surface. I am expecting it to cut a curved surface due to age and likely wear. So anticipating some scraping work on...
Hiya, I see people in the Russian Republic and Ukraine occasionally sell precision straightedge castings supposedly originating from old USSR machine shops.
Anybody have experience with these castings to say if they are actually decent enuf to prep and use to assist in scraping machine...
An old time friend has a like new condition Bradford Milling machine for sale. It’s a Bridgeport clone, likely he bought it new in 1979 for his personal use.
However, I can’t find anything on line about the make or parts compatability with other Bridgeport style clones.
Anybody know anything...
The Hawaiian Railway Society, located in Ewa Beach, Oahu, is interested in forming a volunteer machinist group to support historical railway preservation and operation of their 36” gauge narrow gauge railroad. Desired skill sets are wide ranging, including machining operations, welding and...
Hawaii Railway Society has an old, but decent 18x 72 Cincinnati tray top lathe, that I am working on returning to service. It’s been sitting for a long time, as in years and years, without being operated.
Can anyone verify what machine oil I should change out in the headstock? And are there any...
Iam replacing my SB Fourteen cross slide screw thrust bearings. I see two different styles of thrust bearings available - one uses ball bearings embedded in a plastic or bronze holder. The other style is made with roller bearings, aka needle bearings.
Is one style better than the other? What...
Looking for proper procedure to remove the spindle and gearing on a 1950 S-M 12x48 'Utilathe'.
My lower speed gears are really worn and making a lot noise, so am considering replacing the gears.
However, previously, when pulling the bearings, i could not see any apparent method to extract the...
Hi all,
Just discovered my new to me 1985 Southbend Fourteen can't hold decent tolerance on the X axis when making finishing cuts, e.g. Turning down the radius of a shaft. Spent the day making mucho test cuts. Short of it is:
- dial in .020" depth of cut on the cross slide, lathe cuts .024"...
Just bought a new to me a 220v 3P SB Fourteen with Reeve drive for variable speed control. Nice, tight machine, but after a few test cuts, discovered it stalls whilst taking a .060" cut on mild steel shafting. Spindle slowed down to around 50 RPM due to tool pressure in the work.
Iam going...
Hi, I have a nice SB 9, circa 1925 model in excellent condition. It's been in storage for 60 years and needs to be cleaned up, but has very little wear.
Anybody know where I can find a taper attachment to fit this early model lathe?
Second Q: would a post war SB 9 taper attachment work on...
