Clean the sliding surfaces really well with denatured alcohol or Zippo lighter fluid. Move the reading head all the way to either end to get to it all. Lighter fluid works great on dial calipers too.
Probably because if you left a line on overnight that was plumbed to either there would be no coolant in the head? You run a spindle warm up with no coolant in the head, and spindle possibly overheats. I think the metal line likely feeds from the top of the head, to make sure head has to be full...
This is what I used to do on my machine without probing:
Buy one of the tool setting blocks that lights up when you touch off a tool. We had a Fowler.
Use the block in only one spot on the table for consistency. We used the flat behind the dead side jaw on the Kurt that was normally on that...
Your machine inspection report should be inside the electrical panel on your Haas. I just looked at my VF2SS report. 0.0001 at the taper, .0003 at base of test bar, and .0004 at far end of test bar.
Make sure your spindle taper and tool holder are absolutely clean.
Indicate your current tool with a very sensitive test indicator, mark a flute, record differences for each flute.
Remove the tool holder from the spindle, rotate it 180 degrees, and re-install into the spindle.
Do the indicator...
Maybe something to do with a PCV system? The engine may have to hit a certain temp before the PCV actuates. PCV hose, box, or valve may have some oil in it, and it slowly gets dragged in once it actuates?
My VM3 will do this when the Royal filtermist is running and vibrating the enclosure. Is there some type of vibration? Maybe a close by machine taking heavy cuts?
I wanted to go with a Brother M140x2 for a small fast aluminum and plastic 5 axis machine, but need more than 22 tools for some of the parts. I went VF2ss and TR160. Haas DM is only 18 I think.
Aaron Gough has what appears to be a really nice machine available in the commerce section at a very reasonable price. It is apparent he is in the same market as you are, and has attained a acceptable level of success with the machine. At the advertised price, you could do a LOT worse IMHO. You...
I just listed one of my machines for sale, I figured I would throw a link here too.

I have a very nice 1999 Haas VF-4D for sale. MFD 6/1999, less than 8800 spindle hours since new. It has been an excellent machine for me.
10k rpm 20HP Vector drive, CAT 40 spindle, brushless servos, 20 tool ATC, 4th axis card(no rotary), Pcool, quick code, rigid tapping, chip auger, remote jog...
As far as warming the axes up, we run a program that moves all axes at a feedrate of 150 while the spindle is ramping up. It is about the same length of time (20 minutes)as the spindle warm up, but puts the whole machine in motion over approximately 60 percent of the travel
The regular spindle warm up is a 20 minute program. Looks something like this for a 10k machine:
M3 S500
G04 P200.
M3 S1000
G04 P200.
M3 S2500
G04 P200.
M3 S5000
G04 P200.
M3 S7500
G04 P200.
M3 S10000
G04 P200.
M30
For a 7500rpm machine, you may want to change the P value to 240, and stop at...
