    Reid 2B Surface Grinder

I, too, just acquired a Reid 2-B that's missing it's auto cross-feed mechanism. The original thread above is pretty ancient, but Glenn, if you're still around, I'd love to discuss 2-B grinders and see what you've got.

New to me G. Dufour 51 Universal Mill

Nope, I'll have to make up a bar to lift the head next time I convert to horizontal.

Type of air dryer for small shop.

Refrigerant air driers run to keep the heat exchanger/condensing chamber chilled. The refrigerant pump may cycle off if you're not running air through it, but will cycle back on when it starts to warm up. Not very energy efficient if you just leave it running all the time. I've got a switch...

Milling a large 6061 plate FLAT

I run a seismic test lab and use similar 6061 T6 plates as sacrificial adapter - drilled and counterbored to match my servo-hydraulic shake table mounting pattern, then drilled/tapped and threaded inserts for whatever I need to bolt down (7ft tall 3500lb telecom battery racks and such). The...

OT: Anyone buried an ethernet cable?

Folks having problems with voltage difference and cable or equipment failure is often because they used shielded cable and grounded both ends in different buildings. Small voltage potential between building will result in current through the shield and burn cabling or ground connection points -...

New to me G. Dufour 51 Universal Mill

Glad to see another Dufour on the west coast! I've got a Dufour 61 universal. Looks pretty similar, but has a "parking attachment" for the vertical head (extension of the vertical ways) that slides back on big dovetails on top. Currently mine is in a the middle of a table tear down to clean...

    Lincoln auto dark welding helmet

My Miller helmet gave up after a couple years (6-7?). It has a solar panel on the front. I left it in the sun for a day and it's worked for another 2 years... still working.

How to clean Castrol Syntilo 9918 residue off machinery

Try the purple degreasers available at most autoparts stores. IThey can be hard on aluminum, some paints, skin and respitory tract, but I haven't found it to negatively affect polymerics or rubber parts.

    OT-More odd Subaru behavior

Bad steering tie rod ball joint or possibly failed suspension bushing. Jack the front of the car up so the wheels are off the ground and block safely. Grab the sides of one front tire and attempt to wiggle it (as if it were steering back and forth). If it moves at all relative to the opposite...

    Engine rebuild. Head surface issue.

JB Weld or other high temp epoxy. Anything "squishy" (RTV or similar) won't help support the gasket. I filled a crater (coolant cavitation, corrosion or casting flaw... never did figure it out, but I was only 15 at the time) in a mid-70's Honda CVCC head that was within 1/16" of the combustion...

Slightly OT-Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive

It depends what the part is going to be used in (end product). The RoHS directive only applies to electrical and electronic devices. The original ROHS directive referred to the WEEE directive for scope of products covered. I believe the new "recast" RoHS directive now includes the scope of...

Dufour 61 universal mill - overarm bar needed

I'm in the process of upgrading my milling capability with the recent purchase of a Dufour 61 universal. It needs a good going-through to clean out oil passages, but appears to be a nice solid machine. It's a US import version with inch leadscrews with both inch and metric dials. I ran it...

Overarm bar for Dufour 61 wanted

I recently picked up a Dufour 61 universal mill which was unfortunately missing one of it's overarm support bars: 2.755" diameter (just a hair under 70mm)x 40" long with 30" rack in Module 2 /Diametral pitch 12.7mm. I know it's a long shot, but it seems like the kind of thing someone might...

    Machining down welds

I like to use HSS ground as a vertical shear tool (google it) for finishing iffy material to size. It does a great job of taking off half to one thou and leaving a beautiful finish - chips come off looking like fine steel wool. Since it's a vertical cutting edge it doesn't excite chatter.

    Bonding HDPE to HDPE

Look into 3M VHB (double sided tape). They have verstions specifically for low surface energy plastics like HDPE. You can get it without any "foam" layer in between - if I recall correctly, the no-foam version is called adhesive transfer tape. It takes a little while after application to...

OT - Dismantling Brushless Motor and Magnetism

I spent the better part of a year testing brushless DC fans - similar to a hobby outrunner except had all the commutating electronics in it as well making it susceptible to DC electrolysis. Many types if conformal coating both hard and soft (most dip applied) all failed. The DC lead wires...

Ways to reduce diameter of 1/8"-thick aluminum discs

Before I got to "carpet tape" I had a vision of 20 to 40 discs spinning at 1000 rpm getting getting pushed out of the stack and all taking off across the shop floor, spitting floor paint and leaving little aluminum burn-out tracks behind. OK, now seriously, I think putting bits of carpet tape...

Early Takisawa manual lathes (TSL-800, etc).... how good?

Wife said no, but for good reason... just as I was making plans with the seller to go look at/retrieve it we found out we were awarded a WA historic barn preservation grant to fix up our old barn. Great, except we first have to pay for everything out of pocket, then get partial reimbursement...

Early Takisawa manual lathes (TSL-800, etc).... how good?

Hi Long Tom, Did you get the lathe? I see the ad disappeared a couple days ago (thankfully... now I can stop thinking I need to go get it!)

    Homegrown shaft straightening fixture

Seems to me the effort could have been put into a clamping fixture to hold the shaft straight throughout the rack machining process, then straighten afterwards supporting on then ends, pressing in the middle since it should be a fairly consistant arc rather than trying to straighten...
