OT: How to clean discolored Aluminum?

If you like brick and motor. Buy a bag of Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) and a bottle of Dawn Detergent. Wash the parts in hot (140deg.) detergent soapy water. Rinse. Blow it off with air. Mix the Lye in a suitable container. as described above in my previous post. Alkali attacks aluminum. Acid attacks...

Metal Stamping/Forming - Where to Get Started, Recommended Books

There are Short Run Stampers that only do short runs. Look in the "Thomas Register" for sources. Or take a look at type Whistler tooling or Laser. Justifying the cost of building dies in your own shop for this would be tough. Roger

Best Aluminum Alloy for Bending That Can Be Heat Treated

A better cost-effective way may be using an emboss around the radius in the part to gain the strength needed. Then the choice of Aluminum would be 5052H32. The finish an Alkali Etch. "This problem is in the design of the bracket and not the material for the bracket". God Bless, Roger

    Fix a miss aligned hole

If the plug is properly staked, no need for Loctite. If we felt staking was not good enough. Press in a roll pin, or Taper pin or install a Setscrew at the edge of the Plug and the Plate. I prefer a mechanical fix over using Loctite. Roger

    Fix a miss aligned hole

Drill out the off-center 1/4" holes to plug the plate with a threaded plug being large enough the drill the 1/4" hole in the plug only. Stake the plug in place. File, grind or mill the threaded plug flush on the top and bottom of the plate. Clamp the two plates together and transfer the 1/4"...

Blanking small slugs from fully-annealed C260 brass

The P&D clearance should be Five Percent on a side of the thickness of the material or .0027 total Punch & Die clearance. If the clearance is tight a double break can exist. Ideally 1/3 cut, 2/3 break. At .008 there is too much clearance. Urethane stripper is questionable without a steel...

    Distortion of A2 air-hardening steel

Using a torch to heat treat A2 is not a good practice. It should pre-heated; held at the preheat temperature and then be raised to quenching temperature in a furnace. We might get away with using a torch on much smaller dia. rod. Roger

Need to source type of steel bolt for welding a finger lever onto

There be no affect on quenching low carbon steel. Plain carbon steel (carbon and Iron) will harden when the amount of carbon in steel is between 40 hundreds percent and 1 percent carbon. With the bolt your going to use there is only 10 to 15 hundreds percent carbon. No benefit to quench. Roger

    Solder

Different lead tin alloy solders melt at different temperatures. 40-60 melts 640 degrees, whereas 60-40 melts at 360 degrees and is the ideal alloy to use for electrical wiring with a rosin flux. 10-95 solder melts at 1200 degrees. Depends on design requirements of a product.

Material options for precision, hardened parts with no grinder access

Select the material to meet a desirable end design result. 1018 pack hardened and ground gives you a soft core and a hard surface for stability. The size changes of an air hardening tool steel A2 is a good selection for size and distortion for safe hardening. If your concerned about lapping the...
