K&T 2HL, saddle oil passages and pipe cleaners

Great success was had all around! So, after dismantling and cleaning as well as I could, I went about figuring out a plan to reinstall wicks the full lengths of all passages. The previous 'maintainer' had removed all horizontal runs of wicks, and simply put in vertical lengths of modern...

K&T 2HL, saddle oil passages and pipe cleaners

Re-awakening an old thread -- finally 'got the ass of it' as a buddy would say and I decided to break down the table and saddle. I found the top four pads on the saddle (which would lube the table ways, amongst other bits) were bone dry. I found all of my 'wicks' were wire-core pipe cleaners...

K&T 2HL, saddle oil passages and pipe cleaners

Yeah, I probably SHOULD verify -- fortunately when I got this machine it needed nothing mechanically save for a good cleaning -- all rapids and feeds work, all three axes, in both directions, all feed and spindle speeds - other than a flaky motor starter, I unloaded it off of the trailer and had...

K&T 2HL, saddle oil passages and pipe cleaners

Hey MyLilMule, Hey there, I wasn't able to find the vintage of your K&T either here on through your YouTube library. I've got a 1942 2H (#58-3705) and need to get a feel as to whether or not I should be investigating oil flow throughout the table. Everything SEEMS good, but one or two areas...

    Am I missing something easier?

Thanks for the advice; I'll definitely plan on laying in a known-good straightedge and measuring if there's any inherent table non-flatness to start. I was also thinking propping up the straightedge on known good 0.250" gauge blocks at each end then measuring with gauge pins every inch or two...

    Am I missing something easier?

That was my first inclination too, but after looking more closely at the situation, I'm limited in clearance on most of the existing pulleys, and without doing all of the math, would need to add OD to all (or most!) of the pulleys I'll bet and STILL wouldn't be sure it'll be enough....

    Am I missing something easier?

Agreed -- not very helpful to someone searching a similar issue -- good call!

    Am I missing something easier?

Hi Michiganbuck, I'm trying to get to the set pad/top of the table (mag chuck fully removed) in order to get a nice planar and parallel-to-the-ways base for the chuck to sit on. Plan is then to dress the bottom of the chuck, then flip it over and dress the top, once I've got a sturdy base for...

    Am I missing something easier?

Hi everyone, I've got a c.1928 Brown & Sharpe #2 surface grinder that I've completely rebuilt since it went through a shop fire with the previous owner. All the mechanical bits have been sorted out, and at this point I'm ready to put it into action. Step one is to dress the table top parallel...

Brown and Sharpe No 2 Surface Grinder information needed

    This one is c. 1946, but almost 100% applies to my 1929 #2 http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=16323

    Help identifying lathe

So here's the lathe we've got at the museum:

Help Needed On Bridgeport Pricing (pics)

Couldn't agree more -- the key to "finding" these "great deals" is to keep your eyes open, and be ready to pounce immediately when you see them. It's more vigilance and luck than anything, in my book

Help Needed On Bridgeport Pricing (pics)

Nice find! I got this puppy for $0 -- it was going to scrap if I didn't take it. 36" table, no chromed ways, and the same BP vise you've got (though my handle is broken)

    Help identifying lathe

Not sure how I stumbled on this thread, but I am a volunteer and member in the line shaft machine shop at Rough and Tumble, and will be out there tomorrow for a scheduled work day. This lathe is fully restored (Boy Scout Eagle project) and is in regular use at the museum. I'll take some photos...

Oil pumps not working on K&T

Like they say, sometimes the blind squirrel still finds an acorn. Sadly, I've been bitten by the obvious being overlooked too many times to count, so I'm kind of an expert!

Oil pumps not working on K&T

Can I propose the Occam's razor solution? I have a 2H and I believe the oil pump mentioned above is dependent upon the correct rotational direction of the motor and main pulley (the pulley has a directional arrow stamped on it). Friar, have you checked the motor rotation is correct?

Brown and Sharpe No 2 Surface Grinder information needed

I have a circa 1928 No 2 (serial #8046) that is almost identical to L Vanice's I got mine for less than scrap price; it went through a fire in the owner's garage/shop and the insurance company wouldn't let him touch it for over a year, so it was a MESS of grinding dust and rust -- it got...

Help me find or make nonstandard 5/8-11 nut

So, I had some time this afternoon and did a few test cuts to identify the spindle thread based on the RH nut and 2-ended spindle I do have. I first ground a .042" wide square 'threading' tool, based on my results getting a gauge pin to seat into a cleaned-out thread on the spindle. Seems the...

Help me find or make nonstandard 5/8-11 nut

So.... to confuse matters even more, I have a Delta Carbide Grinder model HD23-505E and am missing the LH arbor nut. The spindle bearings in my grinder are metric (stamped 88503, 40mm OD, 17mm ID, 16.6 width). So, after measuring and agreeing with the general consensus that the thread was a...

    Need help IDing cutters

I've only sorted this stash by arbor size (mostly 1" and 1.25"). I'll sort out all of these specialty cutters and get a good inventory together. The one in the pic has definitely seen a not-too-gentle touch with a grinder... Hopefully most of the remaining ones will be in better shape
