FWIW. China has and can make very high quality tools and machines. However the export business is an entirely different matter. Items made to be sold are engineered for maximum value, not serviceability, or longevity. The crummy low quality tool you buy is made on a high quality machine. Its...
My Keller 5 was sold to me because it didn't cut well. the lift was out of adjustment, and barely moved the arm... but he had the blade on backwards so it was only defeating itself. Now its adjusted according to the manual, and works very well. tension and the gib adjustments made it cut...
This is my Potter and Johnston. It has a rotating work table with built in sine plate. power down feed, 360 rotation head. 220v 5 hp with a 4 speed gearbox.
My Hydryv model 5 will cut with any machine in its size range. It literally rips through anything you put in the vice and its going to be square and smooth. Oil cooled, fresh gibs, and the 14t blade has been on there now 3 years.
in the vertical, my indexed rotary table only has one bolt. IF I was using it in this plane I would have my big angle plate backing it up, or my shaper would blow its busted carcass clean off the table
Never seen anything like this. I had to have it. Plus it fits right on my lathe already!! It came off a twin to my 1917 Walcott 16x64 that fell over being moved. So I bought it for spare parts, it has a lot less wear then mine, I am sure the bushings and gears are in far better shape.
i have not tried, but if i want to bore a cylinder i have to use the powerfeed in the ring area, and then use the knee to finish as i only have 3.75 power down
Ariens all hydro and shaft. parts available. look for a Grand Sierra, with a 60 inch blade. they can use 3 point, front mid and rear pto. built like a tank. i have an older one, does everything i needed, but my new land is too steep for 16 hp
it is my understanding that the bearings are the least of the issues, most older lathes are thread on iron chucks which tend to fly apart at high speeds;.
Always wanted a valve grinder, this one was too cheat to not gamble on, And it works perfect. all i did was oil it up, and plug it in. Now i need to clean it, and replace the lube feed line. PO says it hasnt been used in the 40 yrs he has had it.
I think my antique machines are as much art as machine, AND as others have posted, what would a 16 x 64 lathe sell for? I couldnt justify that change to play with steel. Average price foe a milling machine with 16 in x 12 in way travel? Price of a power saw? My cutter grinder works as a surface...
