King Rich BP vari-speed clone - how to get to brake?

Hmm. It sounds like they saying I should press the thing through from the bottom - i.e. push on the clutch teeth.

King Rich BP vari-speed clone - how to get to brake?

Hi all I have a King Rich KR-V2000. A Taiwanese BP clone with a 3hp vari-speed head. I am going over the head, doing bearings and a new main belt. I want to get to the brake because there is no spring-back on it, and maybe other loose bits inside. Unfortunately it is not like the BP head that...

    Universal mill?

That Tom Senior looks like a handy bit of kit! There's a series one BP with 2hp vari speed head and some tooling for sale very close to home for ~£2700. Condition unknown mind you. I have made a mistake and confused everyone though. I thought a 'universal' mill meant it was horizontal and...

    Universal mill?

I've done some more looking. I think I'm going to go for a vertical mill, but one that can take the horizontal attachment with arbor support (i.e. a head on a dovetail, like a bridgeport). Possibly a Bridgeport or an XYZ KRV2000 or similar. Does that sound reasonable?

    Universal mill?

Having finally got the Churchill Cub lathe back together this weekend (after moving house 18 months ago), and now at last actually working and wired up with VFD + 240v motor (bought 3 years ago along with the lathe!), I have realised I need quite a few replacement gears. The one that looks hard...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Thank you. I think you nailed it :-) I've ordered the manual from Tony. Should have it next week hopefully!

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Can anybody shed any light, and opinions, on this oil pump business ? Apologies for the shaky video and waffling :) YouTube

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

I've got a bit of catching up to do on this thread. Thanks for all the advice everybody. Clive, I would indeed be interested in those diagrams - thanks very much. Regarding the chucks, is there an easy way to tell if they are cast iron or steel? They are both Pratt branded. The 4 jaw says...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Those things appear to cost a bomb, must be really inefficient, and presumably are quite noisy! I'm hoping I can change the motor to a more powerful 230v 3 phase and run it with a vector control VFD for infinite speed control and high torque, and keep costs around £600.

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

I'm not going to. As long as I stick to a 2.2kw VFD or below, the prices are OK. 3kw and up get very expensive if I want vector control. This one might be OK, and the manual says it should be rated close to the motor rating for vector control to work properly, which is comforting. I was...

Thanks for the pointer. I'll mention them no more!

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

actually, no, scrap that. I am thinking 2.2kw. I want to try to be kind to the mains feed to my garage.. heaters, air compressor, lights, and now this. Hopefully not all on at the same time, but if the original motor is indeed 0.75kw, then a 2.2kw should be more than enough, and isn't such a big...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

I paid for it last night and should be getting it home soon. The seller almost laughed when I said I thought the motor was 1hp (0.75kw), but I have read this to be true. I must admit - it looked huge. About 30cm in diameter if I remember right. Anyway, I have been looking at motor options...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Thanks Clive! That's really useful advice! I'll start looking at motors once it's settled in the garage.

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Thanks for all the input and advice everybody. I am going to see it tomorrow, but it's a done deal as far as I'm concerned. The motor is a dual-speed / pole changing motor, 3 phase 415v. I have single phase 240v. I am planning on a 220v single-phase-in -> 380v 3-phase out 4kw VFD. I gather...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

Yes, I am just uncertain on the motor types and requirements. i.e. will it be an induction motor (are all 3 phase AC motors induction?), or will it be brushed? I don't know (haven't had time to research) the winding configurations that are compatible with VFDs (the seller talks about star-delta...

To buy a ~60yr old lathe or not

There's a guy who's well known for moving them for people. Steve Landylift. I've been reading up on VFD inverters and quite fancy the project. I've emailed the seller, and hope it's still available.
