I guess its time for me to start my own Home shop thread.

Yes you have to stud the wall, but you will need to anyway fasten the interior sheathing to anyway. Use 2x6s so you can use 6" thick wool which is R26 here. Rock wool does not compress like fiberglass and will not sag/compress down in the wall over time. You will however have to cut it more...

You need to get set up with enough air to do blasting in house. That way your abrasive is the biggest expense.

Walker Turner 20" Drill Press Rehabilitation Journey

I for one enjoy seeing a machine in a non stock color or shade the original builder could/should have used, especially if the tool was squirted with that ever popular barf green or puss white.:vomit:

Walker Turner 20" Drill Press Rehabilitation Journey

The most talented on here rebuild machines without refinishing, a few of us like to go the extra mile and rebuild/restore, which means factory colors [or close] but there is not many that customize vintage machines. Perhaps, that is why you are not getting much response. I'll bet if you...

How would you build a sound proof compressor room?

One other tip. Cover the wall behind your compressors in carpet, your choice of color, and the thicker the better. When I was assembling mine, I discovered that it was a lot quieter running in the middle of the shop, then when I put it next to the [plywood] wall. Carpet stapled to the wall...

I guess its time for me to start my own Home shop thread.

Did my whole shop, minus the ceiling in rockwool. You need studding anyways, so go 6". Rockwool between the studs and vapor barrier/plastic before the interior covering which in my case was plywood with tin above 7'. Best thing to cut rockwool with is your grandma's electric carving knife...

How would you build a sound proof compressor room?

Do you have silencers on your pumps intakes? On Quincys, that is where most of the noise comes from. Tip; old oil bath air cleaners from old tractors make a great muffler. You just have to delete the oil from them if you run the compressor unloaded. A simple paper filter on the "stack" of...

    Myford super 7

Wow, time flies. I have been somewhat productive though. I have procured some of the essentials for scraping, starting with Connolly's book which I found interesting and easy to understand considering. I am working on the bed now [didn't need much] and have the compound slide assembly nearly...

I usually just sandblast whatever needs it after masking the $#it out of the windings [if exposed], followed by a quick hot water pressure wash [excluding the windings] after, if I am worried about grit in oil passages or sleeve bearings.

Is there anything wrong with the factory bearings? The reason I am asking as I have motors here with 200 000+ hours on them [ventilation fans] still on the factory bearings. I have replaced some motor bearings, not due to age but to being out in the weather or corrosive environments, and if...

Age means nothing. If it turns smoothly and no noticeable radial play, call it good and don't frig around with the pot metal pulley. I have worked with these cheap sheaves more than I want to and their marginal strength DOESN'T improve with age. Unlike cast pulleys, once you have broken a...

Universal Vise & Tool angle plate

Thank you Joe for the insight as always. Disassembled and cleaned it up a bit as it has been sitting a LONG time. Was pleasantly surprised to find all the sliding surfaces including the slotted "struts" were ground. The front/lower outside edge of the table is ground also, I assume to...

Universal Vise & Tool angle plate

Just picked up a almost mint adjustable angle plate for use on my horizontal mill. Figure it will work slick for sharpening machinery blades and knives with a face mill [among other uses]. My question is, was this a commonly used accessory with a horizontal mill back in the day? With it's...

I hear ya. Spend more than anybody in their right mind [that train left me at the station a long time ago] for a machine's jewelry and accessories than the girl's worth.
