I second the recommendation for the Set-Tru chuck. I bought a 10” Bison when I bought my lathe. Easily 95% of my lathe work is done in that chuck. My 16” four jaw only comes out for square work or work that won’t fit in my Set-Tru. Ken
It's interesting that your grandparents lost their ability to speak German. A very close friend of mine's mom was born in Germany in the early 1940's and came to Canada when she was about 16. When she arrived she couldn't speak English. When I met her she spoke English very well and a back...
Back in the early 90's I was working in the bush and we were staying in the dorms of a remote mine site. I was in the cafeteria one morning having breakfast and there was a diamond driller sitting at the next table talking to another guy. Diamond drillers (at least back then) were a fairly...
Hello mmurray70. I'm a bit late to this thread but can you tell me who the Canadian distributor is for H&F? I'm near Winnipeg and was thinking of getting one. Also, now that you have had it for close to 3 years how do you like it? Thanks, Ken
When this happened he was fairly new at school (new to the town as well) and I didn't know him very well. As time went on I realized he was just a knob in general. This opinion wasn't unique to me either.
I got my first dirt bike when I was in grade three. One Saturday my older brother and I were out on our bikes and we stopped at the side of a highway to wait for cars to pass before we crossed it to go home. In one of the cars was my phys-ed teacher and he saw me. On Monday I had phys-ed and...
To your first sentence I'll have to disagree, what I said makes sense. To your second sentence I'll try to rephrase it so it has some meaning. "center hole not being concentric with the table rotation......." means the axis of the centre hole and the axis of rotation of the table are not...
I realize I'm a bit late to the game here, but I wanted to comment as your technique is exactly the opposite of how I was shown way back when. I was shown to first indicate the part concentric to the rotary table axis by rotating the table and indicating the datum diameter on the part (i.e. how...
I remember seeing a LeBlond lathe on ebay about 15 years ago that was still in wax paper and slushing oil. Can't remember what they were asking for it but it was interesting to see one that was brand new (old stock).
Now if you had said 'more levers than a grader' I would have been really impressed. I have a Wotan B75M and all of the movements are controlled by selector switches and push buttons. It has taken a while to get used to it, but it is getting pretty nice to run. One thing I have gotten decent at...
Yes, that is how I hung the rails. I didn't have a lot of room to shoehorn the upper beam pieces into the truss and if I had put an upper beam piece on every truss then they would have had to share the width of the truss lower cord (1.5" wide) with each other. This way there was clearance at...
It's been a few years since I did the design but I think I assumed the load from the end trucks of the bridge would always be spread over four trusses. This assumption was made based on the end truck wheel spacing being 3', the trusses on 2' centres and the 5" S-beam being stiff enough to...
I did something similar to kb0thn back when I built my garage shop in 2009. I used 5" S beams for the bridge rails and an S10x25 for the bridge iteslf. The bridge was 21' long, the rails 27' long and the crane was rated for 1/2 ton. I gave the loads that the crane would put on the trusses to...
These clutches are the type that run wet (in oil) in the gearbox. Because of that they use brass brushes with a much stronger spring pressure to get through the oil film on the slip ring. These same clutches come in a dry environment type and they use carbon brushes.

Hello All,
I have a Wotan B75M horizontal boring mill. It contains nine Stromag electromagnetic clutches and each one is fed power with a brush. The brush holder looks like a spark plug and the brush itself is made of brass. I cannot find any information on how to determine if the brush is...
I bought a new Long Chang (trades under the name "First") back in 2003. It is a copy of a Bridgeport. In 2007 the head started to make noise and I took it apart and replaced all the bearings (not the spindle bearings). The noise went away and to this day it is very quiet. It is a fantastic...
Union Pacific was one of the only US railroads that figured that out. They ran the Challengers and Big Boys quite fast and achieved much higher ton-miles per hour than other roads. Every steam locomotive has a certain speed where it generates it's maximum horsepower. Most railroads put so...
I've never tried either of those but I did used to have my milling machine and lathe in the basement of my house and I used Syntillo 9954 in them. Never noticed any smell in my house. Small house too, 1500 square feet including basement, main floor and second floor. No door closing off the...
