    joining the 9A brotherhood

Well, I thought I had a 10k based on serial number research. But, when I bought a 10k tailstock it was too high. The 9 inch tailstock matched the headstock perfectly. I should have measured first! I'm guessing that in my case maybe back in the past someone took a 10k bed and used a nine inch...

    10k spindle dimensions.

I'm attempting to load some pictures. It keeps telling me file is too big. So, I will have to see how to shrink the file somehow. I was originally going to drill and tap the face and hold the bearing onto the arbor with a washer type item. But, it fit snug enough on it's own to take very light...

    10k spindle dimensions.

I was able to use my other lathe to make an arbor. I turned the shell bearing OD down approximately .005. This allowed a nice fit in the headstock and the spindle was able to be installed with the proper clearance. It works and that's all that matters at this point.

    10k spindle dimensions.

I do have a set of the bushings that fit the spindle perfectly. However, when that are installed into the casting it collapses the bearing just a little too much. I've measured the OD of the bearings and they are bigger than the originals. So, I'm thinking of turning or sanding the OD of the...

    10k spindle dimensions.

Yes, it has the bronze bearings. I found a South bend tech sheet that stresses a particular sequence of removing and replacing. I was able to get the original OD size for the spindle and my replacement is within the specs. I'm thinking of maybe using my harbor freight lathe if I can keep the...

    10k spindle dimensions.

Does anyone know the factory specs on a 10k spindle? I'm restoring a 63 10k under mount style lathe and my old spindle is worn significantly. I acquired a really nice flawless spindle to replace it with. But, it's very tight when installed even with the bolts loose. I measured the OD of the old...

Convert V belt to flat belt 1963 10k UMD

The gear teeth on left of photo have issues. I'm thinking this is all one piece. It appears to be. Unless, I've overlooked something.

Convert V belt to flat belt 1963 10k UMD

I'm trying to restore a 1963 10k UMD. It currently has a v belt 4 step pulley. The pulley has marred up gear teeth and needs replacing. I haven't found a suitable replacement and don't want to spend the $400 ebay price for the pulley. My question is can someone offer me advice on converting my...

Will a 9 inch tailstock fit a 10 inch SB lathe

Nevermind, I researched it and a 10L tailstock won't fit a 10L as far as I can tell the ways are wider on the 10L.

Will a 9 inch tailstock fit a 10 inch SB lathe

Ok, I will have to check the key location on the 9. Do you know if a 10L tailstock will work on a 10k machine?

Will a 9 inch tailstock fit a 10 inch SB lathe

Question do you know if the internal parts of a 9 tailstock can be used in a 10k casting? I've found a 10k casting with no parts. I'm wondering if I could get the 9 and use the parts in the 10 casting?
