I have been trying to figure out why my heavy 10 vibrates at higher speeds, it is a slow oscillation that cases the headstock to sway back and forth. It only happed at higher rpm, but seems to happen in every gear. My machine is on a VFD.
I thought perhaps that unevenness in the belt was...
I found a bunch of these cleaning out a garage. Look like end mill holders of various sizes but I don't recognize the tool holders. What machine are these from?
I am planning on making some tooling adapters for my Gorton 0-16. This mill has the proprietary Gorton taper collets. These are the small collets with 3 flats ground on the shank. Before I start measuring up what I have, I'm curios if any has seen a standard for this collet design anywhere.
Manual turning with laydown inserts, are they intended to be fed using the compound at 29.5° or are they designed to feed at 90° to the part? I use them on the compound because that how I have just always cut threads, but I was wondering if modern laydown inserts were actually meant to be used...
Here she is when I brough her home. I had been looking to upgrade my 9" South bend to a 10l or a 13. Were I live machine tools are not so easy to find, prices are high and condition is often very poor. So I rolled the dice on a machine from HGR surplus. She came form Ohio. $1400 with some...
I am working on my 10L with a D1-4 spindle and something is off. I bought the lathe and tore it apart to move into the basement shop, put it back together an cleaned it up. I have a few attachments for it, and a new back plate I need to machine to mount a 3 jaw. My experience with a camlock...
Working on a 10l that is new to me. Giving it a once over and I noticed some slop in worm gear that is driven by the leadscrew. The worm can slide back and forth about a 1/16th or so. Is this normal or should I shim the retainers to keep is from sliding?
Not my machine, but a picture of the...
I have to move the gits oiler on the back side of the saddle on this mill to install a DRO. That oiler lubricates the table feed screw and nut.
Never fails there is always something the way. The gits oiler I have to remove has 5/16-32 thread... great.
I am thinking of making a 90" fitting...
I bought this Gorton 0-16 with a bunch of tooling. I did not see everything until I got it all unpacked at home. The machine is beautiful condition, very little backlash on the screws, ways look vice, spindle spins like its brand new, just very well cared for machine. It came with a Hardinge...
So this question is not from my work, but for a personal shop machine and I apologize if this is not the correct place to ask. I have read a few threads on this on various sites and have an idea of what some people have done before, but I would welcome any who has hade experience with this.
I...
We are looking at replacing a 60 Ton Mubea Ironworker in our shop. The old machine is adequate in size, but it near the end of it's life.
I am considering a open top type to take advantage of a 24" press break that would be useful with what we do.
I don't know much about the manufacturers of...
We are welding 6" SCH 40 825 pipe. we have experience with 625, 800, and 800HT but the 825 is doing some weird things.
This is TIG with 2% tungsten, 3/32" 625 filler rod, and 100% Argon purge.
I think we have a contamination issue, but have a look at the pictures below...
Initially the root...
We have a decent size hunk of stainless steel 66" wide and 74" long around 18" tall with two ramped surfaces near the center, we need these clearanced by about 1/2". Part weight 8200 lbs. We are located in North Dakota and looking for a shop that can work with this. I have a few contacts in...
Every now and then I really need to cut a metric thread, but I don't want to drop $200 on gear set.
I have a method of producing a 100/127 trasposing gear for 9 and 10 inch south bends for about $40 plus shipping. I can produce one-off or large quantities.
Before I even consider making more...
Let say you have an internal thread you need to repair or cut deeper. What is the best way to index the thread for a single point operation. This is on a Model B South Bend with a chaisng dial.
I used to work in a shop that had a vacuum bleeder for breaks that worked on shop air. It was really nice to use and I have looked for one for a long time but haven't been able to find one. The hand pump ones are a pain in the a$$. I had to replace line on my motorcycle and with dual front...
I have been truning 316L for the first time, using SHARP hss bit and runing 270 rpm or so .005 in/rev feed. It turns great. I get nice cut and a great finish. Here is the problem, when I take a roughing cut, .050" or so I get one mean ass curl that just won't break off. Even at .010" depth of...
Hello again. Been a bit since I last posted but I have finished another project with my old model B. A while back I bought a taper attacment and just now got around to installing it. Fitting the casting that holds the taper bar to the saddle was quite the job. I got a good set of instruction...
Anyone care to wager how much this baby will sell for? I'd bet she could break the 5K mark easy. Pretty machine.

I am moving my personal shop equipment to my new home and have a question about what to finish my shop walls with. Where they are now they sit against a block wall. In the professional shops I have almost always seen block, precast concrete, brick or steel. But in thier new home my tools will...
