I have a 1941 SB 13 x 60 lathe w/ 3-ph motor and VFD setup to run on single phase 220V. I completely rebuilt it. It has tooling, chucks, collets, milling attachment, quick change tool post. I non longer need a lathe and could use the space/money.
I'm in your price range but located in Los...
Tank I made to soak the brazing flux from bicycle frames. I filled it with water and heated it up to about 130F.
The tank is made from steel and was galvanized.
I'm in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Local pick up only.\

I like your suggestion. I have no access other machinery to make the repairs. So I'd need to farm it out. I had to have a pinion shaft made for the gear box and that cost twice what I paid for the whole machine. If I cannot find someone to bore the bearings for me at cost within my budget then...
The needle-roller bearings seem like a good idea. I wonder if the stock oiling systems would work? That is a oil reserve and a loose ring/slinger riding on the shaft.
Secondly - would the shaft need to be hardened to successful on the bearings?
Replacing the bearings may be easy, but getting...
The later models used radial bearings to support the shaft. I don't think there is enough metal to put a set in that could support the loads.
I'm concerned if I bore enough to press bronze bushing it that the cast iron will be too thin.
Thanks!
Hi,
My 1941 13" SB Lathe counter-shaft is shot. The bearings are cast iron. There must be 0.030" slop and the shaft is badly scared. I'm thinking to over-bore the bearings, 4-step belt-sheave and V-belt sheave to 1-3/16" and make a new shaft. Another option would be to overbore the cast iron and...
I have not looked too closely at the motor speed. I noticed how big the motor was for its rated HP and made the assumption it was 900rpm.
I know 900rpm motors are more costly. If I go to VFD I'd get a 1750rpm motor and change the drive sheave.
Its a bugger to change the motor when the lathe is...
I've taken my machine all apart and I'm getting to the under-drive part. It appears the 1941 machine have the original single phase motor. It spins nicely and works perfectly.
I'm wondering should I replace it with a 3-ph motor and VFD. The speed control will be nice but I can live without it...
Gear Box Overhaul
Hi,
I had a new pinion shaft, tumbler gear and tumbler gear shaft made.
The tumbler gear shaft was made from bronze and slightly over-size to accommodate for the wear in the tumbler handle.
Everything went together fine and here are a couple photos:
I'm having a new main pinion shaft and tumbler gear made for me. The work cost 1-1/2x what I paid for the lathe 12-years ago, but considering how much use I got out of the machine it is a worth while investment to me.
The tumbler handle bores are worn and are oversized. I found a new tumbler gear stud shaft and the bore can be sleeved. I'd like to add a needle bearing, but I afraid there is not enough casting to make the bore big enough without significantly weakening it.
The big bore, which the main pinion...
Hi,
My gear box looks pretty good; no broken teeth and the shafts and bearings look good.
But the main drive pinion and tumbler assembly have too much slop and wear. One can see how the main drive pinion has been deformed wear it drives the the tumbler gear. I'm thinking to have the main drive...
I put a straight edge along my ways and near the headstock there is about 0.012" of a saddle worn. Other than that my bed ways don't look too bad at all, I've seen many with more chips and damage.
My tailstock had a shim installed between the base and top part. And the base is worn down and a...
Hi,
My lathe needs the bed reground and other work. I talk to a shop in Orange county and they told me $4500 to regrind and hand scape the parts to fit. It seems like a lot of labor but even so the cost appears high.
Are there any other rebuilders that work on old SBL's in SoCal that you folks...
I am fairly certain this machine had the taper jibs because the bolts and dowels are still in place on the saddle. Someone must of modified the cross feed screw, I have not taken it down yet.
Hi,
My machine, which is a single tumbler 1941 vintage lathe originally came with a taper jig. It was not with the machine when I got it. Which is OK for me because for the stuff I make it is not needed.
But this leave the dovetail cross slide way open and the end of the cross feed screw un...
