I am interested in getting started with gunsmithing. And I was wondering what was required both legally and tooling wise. I am trying to find information on the ATF site about the licenses required in the USA, but I would also like to hear from people who have had first hand experience dealing...
I just chased a nine inch rat out of my shop this weekend and am now on the warpath.
I am in the process of building a "better mouse-trap", and was curious if any one else has used the skills of a machinist in this pursuit to free your homes and shops of such critters.
My current design will...

Check it out! I was given a copy of volume 3 by a friend. I loved it! Especially the motorized shopping cart that goes 60mph.
Also a good recipe for biodisel. (but check the msds on sodium methoxide)

Howdy, y'all!
I am thinking about picking up this lathe with the milling table and collet attachments. But before I do I was hoping to get any comments from people who have used or owned one of these.
I would mainly be doing odd hobbyist work and sticking...
The local shop was not much help. Does any soul here know the way to TIG and Oxy-Acetylene weld copper? I have sheet that is 0.01" thick and of a fairly high purity. I would rather not braze or solder it (mostly for appearance).

I am building a fluids tank that has a glass tube coming out of the base of the tank. To seal it against leakage, I am considering pouring lead around the glass (laboratory grade) to make a seal that can be bolted to the main tank.
Does anyone have any tips/tricks/ideas concerning this?

Okay. I am AC tig welding 2024 aluminum (1/8) in a filet weld. (max amps is ~100, argon, no crater, foot pedal is hooked up) When I reach the edge of the weld, the edges melt into balls. I have tried reducing the balance and even increasing it for more negative, as well as the amps on the foot...
Howdy, y'all!
Been awhile since I posted, but by lurking I have seen that everything is jake.
Quick question though: I was looking through one of my catalogs (Enco) and saw that they have an Aluminum Bronze alloy. I did some checking and I found all the data on it save what common...
Howdy, I just found this the other day when i was looking for magnet suppliers. This site: http://www.wondermagnet.com/main.shtml
has NeFeB (hig strength), AlNiCo (great for temperatures up to 800 degrees F, and they are machinable) and rare earth magnets, As well as "speaker fluid". ;) They...
If you go to www.ga.wa.gov they have some machines that some of you may be interested in at their surplus site. One item is a small lathe and another is a horizontal saw. they have other stuff too. Their items change periodically, so it is good just to keep an eye on them.

Here's something I stumbled across at Lindsay Publications. Nice bit-o' history if you're interested.

This site claims that this is the worlds smallest lathe.
Is this true?
The article is also about miniturization of machines to reduce cost and waste.
Kinda nifty either way.
Does anyone know....
Is there a way to weld/braze Titanium with stick or oxy-acet?
I have heard that tig would work, but not mig, and that you needed a vacuum chamber.
Basically I don't know. I have heard all sorta rumors and such from non-weldors.
I was told at one point (about aluminum) that...

Okay, I have an edge finder. The directions say to move it to the edge of the work ( with the spindle rotating at 1000rpms min ), let it stop wobbling, then to move it in towards the work until it "jumps" offcenter. Then supposedly, you are centered dead above the work in relation to the center...
"Sensitivity per 12 inches in seconds: "
This is for a level at
http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=638-7782&PMPXNO=952100&PARTPG=INLMK3
What does the sensitivity in seconds mean?
Also what exactly is the Graduation Sensitivity per Ft: ?
I want to buy a good general purpose level that...
I have a bar .7" wide, 0.115" thick and 13" long. It needs a 1/4" channel cut 11" down the center length all the way through the material, stopping 1" short on each end.
I do not have a magnetic vise, just regular clamps. How do I clamp this sucker so it does not bow?
I have just purchased some 3/4 inch diameter extruded acrylic rod to make into squid jigs. I am going to have to drill out the center, thread it and turn the outside to an ovid.
Anyone have any hints for speeds, rates, cutting tool, etc? I have never worked with acrylic before, just...
Okay, here's the scoop.
I have a highschool student, David, that wants my help as a mentor for a graduation project dealing with robotics.
His design ideal involves a tracked robot with a camera (no problem there), and a pneumatic gun and missles. Now I could help him design those, but:
