I have a 1950's Doall Model D-10 surface grinder and it's been a champ for all the years I've owned it, but it's developed a leak in the table traverse cylinder. Looking at the diagram, the seal is by rope packing.
In 30 years in the industry, I've never dealt with packing type seals...
I need to weld some parts, followed by a whole lot of machining, milling, drilling and tapping. 1018 HR. The welds do not need to be all that strong, they are not particularly stressed, but the problems with machining the 'hard spots' from the weld and HAZ could be a real pain.

I have terrible luck keeping smaller drills (3/16 and under) from birdsnesting when drilling hole pattersn. Having to stop the machine and pull the chips away is not a productivity booster by any means, so a few tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking at buying a 2M. Seller says it's a 40 taper, but most everything I find on Google points to a 50 taper. Was this a later model, or an option somewhere along the line?

I've got a Cinci 325-12 that keeps loosening its end play on the grinding wheel. I tightened the set screw on the end of the spindle (and tightened the lock nut), but the play gradually increases anyway.
Is anyone familiar with the spindle layout on these machines and the adjustment procedure...
