StanF South Bend 9A Rebuild Thread

Ideally you want any back plate and chuck to be short and it's jaws as close to the front spindle bearing as possible. That obviously helps to increase rigidity. But you also have to factor in what the lathe and it's size is designed and engineered to do. Take the maximum diameter over the cross...

    Gerstener drawer pulls needed

It's not illogical to post what you want, who knows you just might get really lucky. If you don't and you did want to match fairly close to what the other drawers have, turn your own and then artificially rust and age them yourself. Common ingredients like table salt, vinegar and the correct...

    Caliper jaw protectors

From my perspective, there's not enough information given as far as what's being measured, range of sizes, frequency of measurement etc. Ok your trying to measure something abrasive, is that during machining an abrasive substance or for all we know your maybe gauging grinding wheels or other...

    New Lathe Ideas

I'd actually be surprised if that carriage lock wasn't done up tight for shipping purposes.

    Machine brands and thier controls

Spindle rpm changes only when the machine is rotating would mean some kind of Reeves drive. They also come with step pulleys as well which is what I have. Powering it with a vfd makes it at least close to the variable speed heads for ease of use. Most of the Taiwanese clones should be fairly...

    MAHO lost on Autobahn

Inexperience and unsureness? Try telling your theory to some judge after the fact when there deciding who's at fault. Any prosecutor worth the title would just love to hear it. By pure luck that trailer headed off and below the roads shoulder and no one else was apparently involved. It's load...

StanF South Bend 9A Rebuild Thread

If I was looking for a 3 jaw, solid one piece jaw chucks wouldn't be even on my list. The two piece design allow the use of soft jaws which to me is a highly desirable option. Too many fixate on finding very low run out 3 jaws and I used to as well. But there all going to have a certain amount...

    MAHO lost on Autobahn

I've never been to Germany, but from a bit I've come across over the years in various places, German traffic cops seem to take there job seriously. Bad enough to have that much damage, but there's a good chance if the owner was cutting any corners on load limits for any component from the tow...

Surface gauge spindle adaptor to DTI

Given where the OP is, international shipments might be fairly tough to get right now. Boring for a precision fit for the surface gauge vertical post would be better, boring and reaming for size even more so. A correctly sized and simple drilled hole would still work. I doubt there's many who...

Surface gauge spindle adaptor to DTI

M & W doesn't seem to be all that common over here so I don't know the vertical shaft diameter. But as far as the clamp for DTI's, there dovetail dimensions are usually built to a recognized industry standard for size and angle. Lower right corner on this page...

    Long shaft turning

"If" your tail stocks Morse Taper is in fact well aligned with the head stocks true C/L, then your part would have been center drilled very close to it's exact center. If the parts diameter will fit inside the spindle bore, I'd always do it the same as you did. So even sliding the part out and...

    Enco lathe

A couple of the explanations I've run across about not needing matched belts today have mentioned that the belt manufacturing process is now a lot more precise and repeatable than it used to be. And I believe that's correct for at least Gates as Lakeside already said. To be 100% sure, I might...

    Albrecht Drill Chuck TIR issues

Or a possible second reason you could be seeing run out numbers like that. Some don't seem to know keyless chucks have some definite restrictions for what they can or can't do. My Albrecht came with a warning in the few pages of the user instructions not to exceed the diameter with any cutting...

    Powermatic 3520 VFD Parameters

That's my point, you likely don't even need what Powermatic changes in the vfd as a machine specific set of parameters. If you've reset the vfd back to the original manufacturer's settings, then what functions of those are not working for you? Whatever that may be, then use the manual to enter...

    Power feed recomendation

You didn't say cheap, and you didn't want junk. Yes there are cheaper one's that work ok. Lot's of various different forum posts and even YT videos for the different brands of table feed units. Maybe spend some time and do some research.

    Powermatic 3520 VFD Parameters

Which parameters? And what parameters are available? Provide enough information so people don't have to guess. For a wood lathe it can't be too involved. You'd maybe have some user programmed speed presets, min / max rpm presets, ramp up / down times. But it depends on how old that vfd is as...

Magnifier for tools with small dial

One thought, the Mitutoyos 187 - 906 bevel protractors have a included magnifying lens for reading the vernier scale. It should be available as a separate part that could be easily added above your dials. No idea about price, but it would be another option.

FS: three Rockwell hardness tester blocks HR30N80 + and 15N91.9 for $30 shipped and a Mitutoyo 100-125mm mic $40 shipped

Well that looks exactly like both of mine that I bought about 10 years ago. So I don't think yours is a lower end model. I know Mit does have some products built in China and have there own corporate inspectors on site. Built to there specs and passing there own inspection, then it should be as...

FS: three Rockwell hardness tester blocks HR30N80 + and 15N91.9 for $30 shipped and a Mitutoyo 100-125mm mic $40 shipped

Not that I doubt you Matt, but I didn't know Mitutoyo were now building those mag bases in China. If I didn't all ready have a couple of them, I'd be jumping on your more than fair price.
