USCG icebreaker Healy is the newer of the two icebreakers presently in US service
in 2020 fire destroyed one of the two main propulsion ac motors-- section of double hull was removed
allowing extraction and replacement of the 15 megawatt 3 phase motor

As the veterinarians call preforming a "C" section on a animal...."Taking it out the side"....:D

Very cool. My brother does lots of work on small boats (under 30ft length), and it is the same thing - he has had to cut sections out to replace or repair engines.

I wonder why they don't design them to be more easily serviced/for replacement of major components.

Cool! I especially liked the hydraulic cylinders inching the load in and out of the ship. Push/pull, pull a pin, extend/retract the cylinder, drop the pin in, do it again.

And all that happened in only two days. I do have to wonder about how they got access to cut and reweld all that bracing between hulls.

Bolted connections require much more time/materials to make, add weight, and can leak.
Welding is very predictable, strong, and repairable.
