That's sad, but the Navy's reasoning is persuasive to me. If the Navy were not going to use the space, I might feel differently. Down here, Google has agreed to save Hangar 1, the giant blimp hangar at Moffett Field, which, coincidentally enough, was built at the same time as the Bremerton hammerhead. Of course Google was given land use concessions in return.

I've been to Bremerton several times and never driven there, only by ocean.

I have passed the shipyard many times on my way to I5. The crane is a landmark, easily seen from the road when passing.

You post made me search. I m glad to find that the crane "Herman the German" did not get scrapped in Long Beach. It sailed to Panama and is still being used.
