How do you get it out and in without banging the bearings all over?

With the tailstock, the tailstock is what maintains alignment. You still use a porta power to push or a ratchet strap to pull the whole mess out, but instead of blocks of wood to fall off as soon as the spindle is free you have nothing to move until you're ready to loosen the chuck and lift the spindle out. Assembly is reverse, really easy.

Interesting. I’ve removed Hor bore spindles in a similar fashion by clamping a large angle plate to the table and then clamping the facing slide to the angle plate. Just move the table backwards to withdraw the spindle.
