I am finishing up my 42 round dial rebuild and would like to know how others deal with the oil that is flung off the exposed end gears? It would be nice to contain the oil spray so it does not get on the belts and my nice paint job :D

Imnsho lathe change gears are under pretty light duty compared to internal head stock or carriage gearing that are usually lubed in a splash or pumped oil bath. The end change gearing certainly doesn't need an excess of oil so it creates that much of a mess anyway. A few drops of oil on each gear before use ought to be enough. Logic would seem to indicate Monarch thought the same or they would have added some type of sheild so the extra oil wasn't being flung onto that drive belt. Since they didn't then using that much oil to create the extra problem means it's being over oiled well beyond what it needs.

This is not normally a problem. Did you oil the gears or is the oil coming from somewhere else? Clean any excess oil off of the gears and see if the problem persists.

I just oiled the gears and probably over oiled them. I'll run them for a bit to fling off the excess oil and try to be sparing the next time I lube them.

I use WD40 Spray n Stay Gel lube. Its a tacky lube that adheres real well to the gears. I coat them pretty good then wipe off the excess. Being that it stays put on the gear, they tend run quieter as well. Not really an issue on the Monarch, but on my smaller lathe it makes a difference. Don
