I have been collecting parts to return a missing TA to the square dial 10ee I'm restoring. I had one kind gentleman gift me the main castings some time back that are the style shown below. (photo from internet)

Now, I recently purchased a full TA and restored it, but noticed it is of a different style than above:

Is this a round dial square dial thing? Different year thing? I know the first TA I posted has chip guards that go with it. Will this still work with a 1950 Square dial?
She cleaned up nicely btw.IMG_20230321_171916398_HDR.jpg

I know the last picture is assembled wrong. noticed after I took it and remedied.

If everything fits up, why not? You may have to make a new crosslide leadscrew bar, not a huge job, but that is just a hunch.

It's not a round- vs. square-dial thing. All MG-era round-dial on through newer square-dials use the type shown in your first photo. I think that what you have is a TA from a Sundstrand-drive machine, but I don't have much photographic evidence to back that up.

I think that Dave (rimcanyon) said that Sundstrand TAs don't fit on later machines, but I'm not sure why.

I'll try and fit it to the cross-slide when I return home, but I have the main castings for the first photo style, along with the dial and cross bar. I should be able to make one with all that I have on hand.

Won't work unless you plan on installing a round dial cross slide. The square dial cross slide is too long for that 1940 TA. I even had a round dial cross slide with a rear dovetail (which is the same length as a square dial cross slide) that I tried to fit to my 1940 10EE, and it would not work. The longer cross slide runs into the TA bridge, shortening its travel by a couple inches at least. Sell the TA to someone with a 1940 or older 10EE.

Also the height of the casting is different for a 1940 TA. Which means the location of the threaded rod for the bed stop is different. Which means you need a different bed stop than the later TA. Also, the location of the mounting holes may be different, I don't recall.
