303SS bar internal stress...wow

Had a scrap piece of 303 bar stock, has some parts waterjet cut from it. One part would be perfect for some brackets I need to make. Took it to the band saw to cut the piece off and look at what happened...





This is raw bar stock, nothing was machined. I don't think I've ever seen 303 do that...

I don't do much 303 (although I do a few 304 weldments), but that's what 1018 CRS does all the time. One of the downsides to cold finished material.

Very dramatic example, like it. In this case, you can probably bend it back to regain a useful part.

Oh, I thought you said you wanted to make carabiners. Cold rolled stainless is the worst.

Hot rolled 303 can be had. I use it quite a bit.

I've never seen it do that lol...I broke through ok the saw and it just sprung out. Caught me off guard.

I'm surprised that no one asked why I have holes in a scale lol.

Brass is also in need of some meds. It carries a lot of stress with it as well.
